Meh, of course you want to keep talented players from opponents but that wasn’t why Dawgs wanted Fields. Kirby wants everyone and he wants elite athletes and tremendous competition and depth. Kirby also has opined about having a QB that has dual threat elements to his game.

Again, Kirby buying Fields was just as much about keeping him from Gus in our offense as it was about having him become UGA’s future “pro style” QB.

Yeah. We didn't really want him. What team would?

I wish Gus had the balls to do whatever it took to sign another dual QB in the mold of Cam/Marshall,
What good would it do? he can't develop them. Auburn is better off just combing the transfer list and Jucos. Get them a dual threat that somebody else developed and hope he fits.

Anyone who says Fields is either lying or uninformed.

Lawrence grew up a Tennessee fan and his parents are alums. I’m pretty sure he was committed there at one point.

Nope...his parents went to East Tennessee State.

Only say because you have to face fields.

you think if Fields had the mobility of Jacob Eason he would have been considered one of the top two QBs in the nation last year and one of the best QB prospects in recent years?

Why wouldn’t he have been?

Do tell.
I like Trevor Lawrence and think he will be a great QB, but I am quite happy, and yes, thrilled to have Fields.

Fields quite simply checks every box including being a exceptional student, he has every bit the football IQ Fromm had coming out of HS also. The young man is a prodigy and we are very fortunate to have him.

Derp...

Or recognizes that more teams in the modern era have been successful at the highest levels with at least somewhat mobile QBs in college than traditional pocket passers. Lawrence has an elite arm... Fields has an elite arm *and*...

None of that means anything yet... they have to prove they have the ability to do it at this level, but to think that preferring Fields is an uninformed opinion somehow is laughable. Not to mention the recruits that Fields brought with him (and still is) relative to guys that Lawrence brought with him...

all this is true. It seems SEC fans of other teams want to find some chink in the armor on Justin Fields - so they just invented one.

What I'm saying is that he can say whatever he wants about wanting to be a pocket passer, what makes him special is his ability to run and that's been his instinct anytime he gets in trouble.

Ding ding ding.

This is the case with most mobile QBs, because it’s worked for them their whole life and IMO why some tend to struggle at the highest level. The linemen and LBs are just that much faster in the NFL.

I don’t know why people are taking this as a knock. Tons of Heisman winners had this mentality. If that’s what Fields does in Athens I’ll be ecstatic.

Dawgsontop,

I, and others that know more about Fields than you and Randy Savage, are taking it as a knock because in no way is Justin Fields even close to your run of the mill dual threat QB. My knowledge of Justin Fields is through watching about 10 high school games from beginning to end because my kids go to Harrison HS. Justin Fields arm talent is ELITE. He has a cannon, is accurate and is student of the game - 29 on ACT.

Savage keeps saying what makes Fields special is his running- what makes him special is he has it all - if he were a baseball player (oh yeah, he is), he would be what you call a 5-tool player.

His opening performance was the best ever. He would be special without his running ability.

I just have no idea why you’re taking what we say as an insult. He has a fantastic arm, and I never said otherwise. I just believe that what takes him to the highest level is his ability to run. It’s the same thing Tua has. Same w/ RG3, Manziel, Mariota, etc.

It’s almost as if this might make you overly biased in favor of Fields.

Going back to the original topic. Lawrence has been groomed to play QB his whole life. He's a good athlete but his arm and knowledge of the game through years of reps and reading defenses etc... is what has gotten him to where he is.

Fields has always been an elite athlete. For most of his life was a baseball player first and when he did play football he was always the most athletic guy on the field and could make plays with his legs. He didn't start as a freshman, got hurt as a sophomore so has really only played a season and a half of Varsity football. Nobody is doubting his arm talent but even the most elite dual threat guys before him (Vick, Cam) have struggled throwing the football some at the highest levels because they have always been able to get out of trouble with their athleticism when a first or second read wasn't there. It's not a knock on Justin but it's almost impossible to coach those instincts out of guys who have been using their athleticism their whole lives and frankly it would be stupid to try and do so.

YES, both Cam and Vick have great arms as well as wheels. Neither have good accuracy and neither are particularly smart.

Baker mayfield did a very good job of it. Justins opening performance suggests he would be just fine looking to throw first and foremost. With our OL, he will have plenty of time to throw.

You can’t seriously be comparing the Opening performance to a college football game?
