Recruiting expenses for the Crimson Tide football program jumped again in 2011 to total $980,882, according to documents the school filed with the NCAA. That wasn’t a major bump from the $870,438 it spent in 2010, but it’s 2.7 times higher than the $360,327 it spent in 2008.
The expense represents only 3 percent of the total spent by the program, but its increase offers insight into the importance placed on drawing top athletes.
The $980,882 pays for transportation, lodging and meals for recruits and families during official and unofficial visits to campus. It also went to phone calls and postage for recruiting purposes.
It also paid for use of university vehicles and planes for in-home visits.

And the investment has paid off.
Three of the last four Alabama’s recruiting classes topped at least one of the national rankings. Oh, and those prospects helped the Tide win two BCS national titles in three years.

I wonder if we'll recruit Jesse Williams little brother in Australia next year? Can you imagine flying down under to see a kid and his parents.

Makes sense. Bama is going after lots of guys in Maryland, of all places, every year, not even to mention going out to every rivals 50 player and offering him. Then there's also where Tuscaloosa is and how the only place that's easy to get to from there is Birmingham, so just getting to Mobile to see kids is a hassle.

Agreed.. the national recruiting and success doing it has led to the largest increase. Bama had gotten pretty regional for awhile before Saban.

Drop in the bucket when the consider the money that those players bring into the program.

That is what I told everyone that complained about Saban's salary at Bama. College football is as popular and lucrative as ever. The investment in success pays huge dividends.

Just imagine what that number would be if we knew what "perks" the players get.....
And before any butthurt Bama fans reply.....it happens everywhere.

No Saban lost focus on the state and started going national.

Also in 2008 Something like 17 of our recruits were from Alabama. That was the best year of instate talent I can recall in a long time. Since then we have taken many more from out of state and not just in the bordering states. If Gene made Saban recruit more nationally then I owe Gene a big thank you.

I am not against national recruiting, but this is what Bobby Bowden said was his biggest mistake. He said he stopped recruiting the kids that had played together their entire lives and wanted to win for their school that they had pulled for since childhood. He said if he had it to do over again he would have focused more on in state recruiting rather than cherry picking the top players from 7-8 different states. It has worked for them so far though.

That's more accurate.

He's moving to the US. He will probably attend a prep school in the Southeast and study "maths."

Mercedes are cheap when they can go missing off the assembly floor that's just down the road.
