1. He was asked to postpone, not told to gf himself.

2. How many he should have taken is based simply on emotions and the reaction to the emotionality of the student.

As I said, hate the kid got dealt the disappointment, but he still signed a LOI to a major University today and had 4 others to choose from, including a chance to still go to Bama at a delayed time. There's a bit of an overreaction due to emotional responses in this case. I want Saban to do what's best for the University, if that means taking a LOI from someone and giving it to another then I'm good with it. Folks that are angry, should write the SEC office, it's President's and the NCAA and lobby for more scholarships, and things like this wouldn't be an issue.

I hear where you are coming from. I just think that the risks taken for a marginal improvement (if that, because I liked Philon as much as any DL in this class) in one of 26 spots aren't worth what we are getting out of them. This is going to be used against us by schools like Auburn, FSU, UGA, etc. It could potentially hurt us with a couple of his teammates in the next couple of years. I just don't think it was worth doing.

We screwed up. The kid was in tears this morning because he wanted to go to Alabama but couldn't. You can try to spin it any way you want to, but we completely botched this kid's recruitment.

This is per a Vigor Assistant Coach. NOT my words, but the coaches description of the timeline. I will refrain from adding my personal commentary at this time.

June 2011
-Philon Camped at Alabama
-Bama initially offered with NO mention of greyshirting. Greyshirt NOT mentioned.

Late August 2011
Philon de-commits from Auburn

September 1, 2011
-Philon commits to Alabama
-Greyshirt NOT mentioned

Mid January
-Alabama Staff comes to Philon about potentially Greyshirting. They explain entire process to him
-Philon declines Greyshirt Offer
-Bama Staff is OK with him declining and he still has offer to enter with the Class of 2012 as a regular scholarship player

A Few Days Ago (Less than 1 week ago)
-Staff tells Philon he has to Greyshirt as they have oversigned
-Arkansas immediately offers him a scholarship when they hear he only has Bama Greyshirt Offer
-Tennessee, Florida, Clemson, and Ole Miss also begin recruiting him

Today, Signing Day
-Kid shows up for Ceremony confused
-Heart is with Bama but he feels he has been wronged and mislead by Staff
-Announces for Bama today at ceremony but doesn't sign LOI
-Leaves ceremony and goes into hallway where coaches find him crying, destroyed by what has transpired
-Philon decides to sign with Arkansas

Quote from Vigor Assistant Coach:
"His injury had nothing to do with it. That is an excuse that some are trying to use. Philon played 3 football games on that knee after it happen. It all had to do with over signing"

I think it's a horrible situation either way. I guess with the old limits, he could have signed him today and worried about the 85 limit later. The reality is the reality though. The question is whether or not it's better to sign to a team that won't likely use you, but to get the team you want, or to have someone give you the opportunity to go somewhere else that may give you a better chance to succeed, even if it's not what you want to hear. I think Saban could have handled it better, if this is what went down, but at the end of the day, it would have hurt either way.

In the end, I don't know which is better.

Agreed. I guess the reason I think it stinks so much is the fact that this kid hasn't even visited another school since committing in September. It's not like he committed and still wanted to enjoy the recruiting process like some kids do. Or even if he decommitted and came back, ala Ricardo Louis and Auburn. This kid got his offer and wasn't a headache for the coaches throughout the recruiting period.

As Hunter said though, this too shall pass.

Saban did this all on purpose to keep him from AU.

And I understand that perspective. My only point towards that is that I trust the staff to have a little more insight as to who they think they can develop better, having met and talked and studied alot more film than youtube has to offer. It's clearly a crappy situation to be in, but it's one the President's of the University's put the coaches in, with having to fill scholarship limits and have to battle last second swaps, like happened alot today with other programs.

The emotional turmoil everyone is wrapped up in will pass and everyone will move on past this, including the now committed Arky player

It's hard to see people in emotional turmoil, when people feel like it could have been avoided, or if he had more time to emotionally prepare. That said, until things are written in stone, it's perfectly appropriate to remember that you need to keep your eggs in a few baskets in case things don't work out. It doesn't excuse the actions of people who you feel have wronged you, but it gives you a little bit of a safety net if things don't work out the way people tell you they will.

Saban will have to deal with the backlash when he's recruiting next year. Surely, all of the people who have committed with him see what's happened, see how many stars they have, and are worried that they might be on the bubble, or that things aren't as secure as they may want them to be. That's Saban's burden.

This really isn't unprecedented. Didn't LSU deal with this two years ago, but the kid ended up coming back to LSU anyway, after signing with Kentucky?

Is that the kid who was kicked out of the dorm room?

Exactly. And that's exactly what the staff did. One or two decommitments or last second changes and then Bama is left high and dry and he'd be getting blasted for not drafting a (insert position) or being prepared if they chose differently. Recruiting is a very fluid proposition, and as much as I hate to see folks disappointed, I'm ok with the Coaches doing what they feel is best for the University and for their future while there. College is all about transitioning into growing up. Sometimes the lesson is harder learned early.

I believe so. That was also 1000x worse than this situation because that kid had already moved into his dorm when they told him he had to leave.

Did CNS/Alabama screw up? Yes!

Does Philon (or his coaches) have a leg to stand on when it comes to an issue over whether CNS/Alabama went back on their word? NO!

Am OK with what CNS/Alabama did? No.

I think more people will have to start going the way GA Tech looks at it. Give your commitment and end your recruiting. If you continue to visit then you do not have a commitable offer.

I mean I hate the kid didn't come to 'Bama. I feel bad for him, but also he still had an offer. It was just in the form of greyshirting. I think if he still feels that strongly about playing for 'Bama. . than he should just hold on and wait.

At the end of the day, at least he gets to play for a big time SEC school, still a beast, and still can make the NFL.

Maybe so, but it could also end the way Elliot Porter saga ended. Where all parties, with the exception of Arkansas, are happy in end.

This is the best possible outcome for the vast majority of situations in general.

I dont think it will hurt him. People have been complaining about processing players for a while and it hasnt affected him yet.

Of all the complaining and gnashing of teeth by the anti-Oversigning brigade, not one disgruntled kid has come forward.

Maybe for Bama they haven't. We have a whole sportscenter segment staring Chris Garrett and Elliot Porter.

Look this type incident happens to different kids in school every year just so happens it happened to Philon this year he knew his options in Mid January and had his chance to commit without greyshirting at another school "not his school of choice" but when you are a 3 star and commit to a program like Bama "thats full of 4 and 5 stars" you gotta expect things like this. Everybody knows it gonna happen,it hurts, but whether you want to believe it or not it's a business.Although I don't think it's right, "it is what it is". If it were me and I was a 3 star and wanted to go to Bama but had to greyshirt and got an offer from another SEC school to play without greyshirting then that's what I would have to do to play. That's part of growing up,making decision's,and adapting to different situations that arise good or bad.

Now we have to figure out what to do with the next 90 days while we wait for A-day. There will be a little basketball between now and then I guess.
