Went back and watched his junior highlights: LINK

Positives:
1. Strong arm as evidenced by 60 yard bomb through the air on first play
2. Absolutely great touch on his throws
3. More athletic than the "pro-style" label would lead you to believe. Is capable of being the best running QB at Bama in the last 10 years (excluding B. Sims). Definitely want to keep him out of harm's way though until he adds some weight
4. Love how he looks throwing when rolling out (both to his left and right)

Concerns:
1. Obviously no snaps under center
2. About 80% of his completions were to 1 receiver (#4). If #4 was a senior last year, it'll be interesting to see if he's able to maintain his same level of production without him
3. Level of competition. On the flip side he's not going to know what to do with receivers over 5'10 and who run sub 4.8/40. Throwing over OL and DL taller than 6' will also be an adjustment

Nice work man.

This is what I posted on Bateman 13 days ago, once I saw his junior film was out:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I missed the initial excitement over Bateman's comments due to being in San Antonio for work.

I read the latest update and decided to refresh myself on his ability. In doing so I noticed that his Junior highlight reel has been released since my first analysis. Here is the video:

Junior Highlights

First off, he has gained some weight. He doesn't look as skinny as before. It appears to have been good weight as well.

Secondly, he has a terrible O-Line. I noticed a good number of mechanical issues were due to not having adequate protection and having a defender in his face.

He definitely has a strong arm and his footwork, when not pressured, is great.

One thing that was still lacking was his number of snaps from under center. I am always skeptical of kids who spend most of their time in the shotgun formation, but I know that is on his coaches, not him.

All in all, I like him more now than I did yesterday. Apparently 24/7 does as well since he moved up from #56 to #48 in the 2013 class rankings this week.

I'm starting to get the feeling that Bateman is our "guy" at the position in this class. While I was initially hesistant to endorse him, I'm starting to think he is the best fit for us.

I know his offer is conditional upon him throwing at camp in June, but he is ranked higher than AJ was coming out of his senior year, so that has to count for something.

FYI, there's a Rivals article that quotes him as saying that he's most comfortable under center just doesn't get to do it in his high school system

A statement from highly-recruited quarterback Cooper Bateman

“I have chosen to attend the University of Alabama. I am honored that I will get to learn from Coach Saban and Coach Nussmeier and will get to represent Alabama, the state and the University. I want to thank my coaches at Cottonwood for all they have done for me and mostly to my parents who have made this all possible.”

Great, great news....

I found my first grey hair the other day. Fortunately it is on my face, but I will gladly trade you.

Wait until you get your first grey chest hair like I did a few months back.

Not a lot of black kids in Utah

Yeah, that'll happen in a state formed around a sub-religion that is full of racism

My biggest concern as well as Utah doesn't have very many Div I level recruits.

This is a much bigger concern with someone like a RB, WR, or D-lineman.

Has anyone else noticed that both the Auburn and Florida recruiting threads have been eerily silent this morning?

Ya, I would think evaluating QB's is more about arm strength and decision making.

I would be worried IF he hadn't went to combines amongst competition and won MVPs

Won Dallas MVP

quote:

ARLINGTON, Texas -- It was one of the best Elite 11 fields the Dallas regional event has seen in recent years.

With Cowboys Stadium as the backdrop, Saturday's event featured multiple quarterbacks committed to some of the top college football programs in the country and holding multiple BCS conference offers.

At the end of the day, only one was good enough for the 247Sports staff to select them as the MVP of the event.

247Sports Elite 11 MVP:Cooper Bateman, Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood

From start to finish, Bateman showed the skill set of a top pro-style quarterback in the class. He delivers the ball without wasted motion, can change ball speeds in drills and showed the ability to throw the ball with as much velocity as needed. Overall, we felt Bateman was the best quarterback in a talent field of prospects. Utah, BYU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida and LSU are among the favorites to land Bateman.
