LSU order of surprise:
1998 - Faulk and co seemed poised for a great season.
2003 - I didn’t think I’d ever see a national title.
2019 - I only expected a loss or maybe 2, but the gap between that and what we saw was yuge.

1991, went 11-1 in Bebes' second season. Didn't see that one coming.
The bad, 2000 ... by a mile.

It helped that he went from 35.5 attempts per game in 2007 to 23.0 attempts per game in 2008. I don't know what Applewhite was thinking with his play calling in 2007. Five games with 40 or more attempts in 2007, most attempts in a game in 2008 was 31.
After the 2007 season, phone conversation between Mack Brown at Texas and Saban goes like this:
Saban's phone rings:
Brown-Hello Nick. Mack here. I'm thinking about hiring Muschamp and he gave you as a reference, Whadda you think?
Saban- Yeah. He good. Take him out of my hair. And while you're at it, take your boy Applewhite off my hands.
2008 both Muschamp and Applewhite are at Texas.

2012 was not expected.
Talented team that abandoned the coaching staff and gave no shite.
I'm not sure why Auburn fans are ever shocked at a season.... literally every season is usually shockingly better or shockingly worse than preseason expectations. Just off the top of my head:
1993, 2004, 2010, 2013 were all unreal seasons that hardly no one saw coming.
2003, 2008, 2012, 2015 were all shockingly bad.

Pretty sure no one saw Lou Holtz winning 8 games in 2000 after going 0-11

in my lifetime? The year of 2000. Defending SEC champions, pre-season #3 but instead won just 3 games.

Last season. I still can’t explain how we managed an 8-win season losing that many QBs and resorting to Bowden under center.
He is truly an exceptionally athletic person with a high football IQ!
I would have loved him at Bama..
The young man was amazingly unselfish in sacrificing for the good of the team.. He might have been drafted a little higher had he got to play as an H-back/Slot or even wide receiver....
Kentucky fans will forever be endeared to Lynn Bolden...

Good surprise: 1993. We had just finished two consecutive 5-win seasons, Dye had resigned in disgrace, had been humiliated by a former player for illegal benefits, we were on probation (if memory serves we were the last P5 program to receive a TV ban) and had hired an upstart HC from Division 1-AA Sanford (whom we had beaten 50-0 for one of our few wins the year before), based only on his last name. We managed to scrape by Ole Miss in the opener, beat LSU, Vandy & MSU (none of whom would finish above .500) before shocking #4 Florida in a huge upset. Ended with an improbable come from behind win in the IB over defending NC Bama and finished 11-0 and #5 in the AP.
That might of been a NC team if not for probation. By the end of the year that team was tough, tougher than nails! Auburn had a running back, I can't recall his name, but he was mainly a fb or blocker, and he just would grind 1 yd 2,3 5, 7-9, and the off to the races 25-+ td!

For Tennessee 1998. After losing Peyton Manning and Lenoard Little, I actually told my co-workers that they were going to be 7-5 or 8-4. No way I ever thought they would come anywhere close to 13-0.

Doubtful. When the regular season had ended in 1993, there were three undefeated teams from major conferences: West Virginia (Big East), Nebraska (Big 8), and Auburn (SEC). What you also had was an 11-1 Florida State team that, despite its one loss, was ranked #1 above all the aforementioned teams. You also had an 11-1 Notre Dame squad that was just as highly regarded that had defeated Florida State late in the year.
There is no way Auburn gets a shot at the national crown if they aren't on probation. They weren't anywhere near as highly thought of as the above mentioned schools were entering the post-season. The only teams that had a legitimate shot at winning the national title at the end of the season were Florida State, Nebraska, West Virginia and Notre Dame.
