Are you using Houston and Atlanta as your major business hubs? Also, what kind of business are we talking about here?

Sure, I guess New Orleans is borderline. The things I look for are diversity of business opportunity and growth and the presence of the professional services industry.

I'm a lawyer, so using what I know, cities with major law firms in them, or a lot of mid size growing firms, are capitalizing on growth in the area. Hence you have big firms in Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Charlotte, and to a lesser extent Birmingham, but you have fewer or more stagnant ones in Mobile or Little Rock or Jackson.

For Arkansas to really take off, you'll need Memphis to either boom, or Little Rock to boom, or both. I don't think NW Ark can do it alone unless it just expands at an unbelievable rate and adds a ton of variety and infrastructure. As it stands, you have the hub for a massive retailer, a poultry producer and a trucking company. They're all very good companies, but they just can't support a state looking to get on the upswing.

I'm not slighting Arkansas in the least, and I'm sure you guys know about some other things on the rise in the region that may help. I just think the plight of Mississippi and Arkansas, from a geographic and economic perspective, is interesting.

Arkansas will always have the hurdle of not having a major business hub anywhere nearby. This will be what always holds Arky and Mississippi back from seeing major progress like Alabama and Louisiana will enjoy in coming decades.

How are the school systems in that part of the state ? That seems the biggest problem for Southern States like Ark (and Alabama). That type of money could make a big difference.

Throw money at it, it will be fixed. If no results in ten years, clearly you just didnt throw enough money at it to begin with, double down and throw more. In 20 years you might be as succesful as palestine.

I know at one time, Ark Teachers were the lowest paid in the country. Money does not fix everything, but it can be the great equalizer.

Mississippi is fricked. I think an Oxford, Tupelo, Memphis triangle might be our best hope.

MWA is one of my favorite places but I'm just getting tired of our football team losing.

Agreed, but Memphis really needs a niche and I'm not seeing it right now, especially when Nashville is climbing so quickly.

Memphis is the hub for FedEx so Memphis does have that going for them.

If Arkansas as a state wants to succeed, for starters, it needs to stop taxing & spending a higher percentage of its GDP.

It helps, but Atlanta couldn't be Atlanta with UPS carrying the load. I'm not pretending like Arky can go get another 10 Fortune 500 companies to move to NWA or Memphis, but something will have to happen to get that area moving. Obviously this type of funding will help, but they need to something more generic than a single business (LA/TX have energy, N. Alabama has tech and engineering, Greenville SC has some engineering, Birmingham and Charlotte had banking, etc.).

Pay is based on cost of living. I make half of what my colleagues in northern CA make. I can also buy 3x the the house around ATL than they can.

Would you rather make 90k in DC or 40k in NWA?

Personally, I don't really care whether NWA becomes a major hub for business, industry, etc. I like it anyway.

I'm just tired of the Razorbacks losing football games.

We are focusing on the $50MM a year until 2020 by the Walton Foundation allocated to NWA (Northwest Arkansas) and Helena, Arkansas.

Closest major city to NWA is Tulsa (118 miles) which is bigger than Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Not far from Oklahoma City which is bigger than Atlanta.

The other allocated city is Helena, Arkansas for the Walton Foundation. This is strategically planned as Helena is (70 miles) from Memphis. Memphis is the same size as Detroit today.

Both of these cities are located slightly off I-40 and one is directly on I-49 and the second will be linked to I-69.

The Arkansas River runs through the entire state as does I-49 and I-40 and part of future I-69.

Baton Rouge to Houston is 217 miles
Fayetteville and Little Rock is 310 miles

Explain to me why Arkansas cannot grow yet Louisiana can? We also have more F500 companies already in place than Louisiana.

Arkansas
4 F350
8 F1000

Louisiana
2 F500
5 F1000

I have an MBA in Marketing and took strategic planning and innovative technology classes at Stanford, I welcome this debate Mr. Lawyer.

5 hours to KC, St. Louis, Dallas, and Memphis. 3 hour drive to OKC, 1 1/2 hours to Tulsa. Not all that hard to reach. How many big markets are that far from ole miss, miss st, bama, and auburn?

I don't think you realize how centrally located Tuscaloosa is. All within 500 miles: Memphis, Birmingham, Nashville, Atlanta Memphis, and New Orleans.
