Y'all ever heard the term "Air Yards"?

air yards - the distance of the ball thrown downfield before it reaches the receiver.
example 1: line of scrimmage is the 20 yd line. receiver is at the 30 yd line. that would be 10 "air yards".
example 2: line of scrimmage is the 20 yd line. receiver is at the 17 yd line. that would be -3 "air yards".
want to know how many air yards Florida had against Vandy?
28 total air passing yards
want to know how many total yards passing Florida had against Vandy?
280 total passing yards.
kind of a crazy stat line. there's a florida podcaster that likes to review the offensive and defensive playcalls for every game. kinda crazy to think a fan cares that much, but anyway, he discusses it in the Vandy Offense Review.

Yes. This is what 10rC fans were jerking off about in regards to Milton in the preseason

shouldn't it be more since the QB is likely several yards behind the LOS?

Tua and the Dolphins are showing that speed + guys who don’t know how to tackle in space can work.

not necessarily. the line of scrimmage is always considered the "0" yard mark for every stat line. anything behind that line is a negative.

so basically total yards - yards after catch.
It isn't a flawless measure of QB performance though. While some YAC come from individual effort by the receiver, some is also due to the QB hitting the receiver in stride vs making them stop or dive to make the catch.

Cool, so the QB was 8yds behind the LOS... and deduct that since it's a negative. Awesome!!

well, think about it...
LOS is at the 5 yd line.
QB is in the endzone throwing downfield for a TD.
is it a 95 yd TD pass or a 100+ yd TD pass?

He is a great Podcaster.
I haven't watched him in several weeks. And I don't believe is 100% correct on playcalls and assignments.
But 99% off your couch is pretty darned good.
Definitely a great watch for Gators and their future/past opponents.

Yes, but only really for NFL games. I've had trouble finding that stat for college games despite looking for it a few times, I guess this podcaster just does it for Florida games?

Yeah, we used to joke about Tua throwing 5 yard passes that his receivers would turn into 25 yd plays. NFL Tua a different beast

It's cool that yall have that then. I wish I could find somewhere that tracks it for all college games but I guess there's too many games compared to the NFL to track every pass for every game in every week.

It really doesn’t explain “Air” yards at all.
If the LOS were the 20;
Qb drops back to the 10;
……on the left sideline;
Receiver catches on 30;
……on the right sideline;
That’s like 65 yards the ball is in the air.

sure it does. i've explained twice now in the thread.
LOS is the 20
QB hands ball off at 18
RB is tackled at the 30
Did the RB have a 12 yd gain or a 10 yd gain?
Same rule applies to passing. the LOS is always the 0 yd line no matter the stat line. anything behind it is negative. anything beyond it is positive.

It's neither. It's a 45yd TD pass that cover 95yds. Why 45yds... because the receiver caught it at the 50yd line and scored.

It's somewhat skewed because Florida has a lot of passes in the back field on swing passes, jet sweeps, and screens.
Well, maybe that is what it indicates more than anything.
