Actually, the game was closer than I expected.
Indiana has a good team but no, they aren't playoff material.
Not sure why the Gameday crew felt a need to pile on but they are correct.
But the real answer is the 8 best teams regardless of conference championships with strength of schedule as a significant factor.

Combine bcs with playoffs, make it 8-12 teams depending on circumstances as deemed by committee.

Saban looks silly in that hat. He must have watched Tombstone last night. Drug store cowboy.

Meh, IU scored 2 late meaningless tds when ND had the game won. IUs coached punted with 10 minutes to go down 3 scores. Wasn't impressed

Give full story. Saban started off with needs to be tweaked but far better and will be great moving forward vs other system.
Wait, fake news by the OP. Disregard my above rant.

Michigan won the natty last year by 3 touchdowns. Georgia won the year before by a million. There are blowouts every year in the college football post season as there are in every sport in the world.

Treating conference champs as equals was full retard. By far the most glaring oversight.
DEI playoffs didn't work. Film at eleven.

I’m cool with conference champs getting an automatic bid, but not an automatic bye. If they did only one thing to improve it then this would be it.
And no Bama still wouldn’t deserve a spot. Can’t lose to Vandy and the worst OU team in a generation and expect a slot.
And in fairness, the system should also ignore rankings until Nov 1. Too many teams playing scrubs in Sept. October is the meat of the schedule and only then do you know what you have. And strength of schedule has to be a factor.

There will always be these type of games.
It was a 10 point game. The only post season game that's been closer was Memphis winning by 5.
The group think on this board is fascinating.

Agreed. Even back in the BCS or 4 team playoff ...rankings should not be in play right away. I'd even be fine doing rankings in mid October after the first 4-6 games.

any playoff without 6 SEC teams isn't legitimate and especially now that we're forced into these big matchups for TV ratings.

Why do college basketball teams like Murray state play any game besides conference tournament at the end? That’s all that matters.

I’m hoping the following teams get run out of the stadium.
Indiana - Check
SMU
Clemson
SMU
Boise State
Arizona State actually played a decent schedule.
Bama, Ole Miss, South Carolina should have been in over 3 of those 5

ESPN, who is paying 1.3 billion a year for us to get a playoff, is about to lose a ton of money under the current format if the committee doesn’t reward SOS as the guidelines require for comparable teams. That is an enormous sum of money for 11 games. For context, they only pay 300 million for the SEC game of the week plus SEC title game under the new contract. So ESPN thought they could get roughly 4x the value per game that the SEC’s best weekly matchup brings. They are not even getting SEC regular season game value out of matchups like ND/Indiana, SMU/PSU, and half the 2nd round involving games vs Boise State and Arizona State. That’s a minimum of 4 of 11 games being ratings duds, with more to come if any of those 4 teams happen to actually win a game.
This is ESPN’s way of basically signaling that if the CFP doesn’t make adjustments the next steps will be a breach of contract lawsuit and/or cutting their losses and sub-licensing the entire thing to TNT, the CW, or whoever else will take it off their hands.

For someone who has literally only seen the final score and admittedly did not watch a single play of the game why is Indiana getter dogged so much for a 10 point loss? Was the score not indicative of the actual game, I’m assuming?

So....how do you fix it?
Much like everything else in college football, college football did this to itself.
Want to be in the playoffs? Instead of paying an FCS school to come to your house to take a beating, schedule the Boises and SMUs of the world even if it means, dare I type, having a play a road game at a "lesser" school out of conference.
Bama caught flack for playing at USF, but what if they had played at Boise instead buying a win against Mercer?

Perhaps using the same metrics basketball does like another poster suggested.
