I am a huge supporter of these state-funded resident tuition assistance programs, but they are sending kids who don't deserve to go to college there on a free ride. That iobviously doesn't apply to students at UF and UGA...I'm speaking towards kids at Southern, LSU-A, etc.

I'm going through admissions and whatnot right now and IMO, Auburn and Alabama are pretty even academically. The only real difference is it's harder to get accepted to Auburn and harder to get scholarships. But you're right, Bama has improved as of late

i know what you mean. all i know is for hope you have to have above a 3.0 gpa in HS (they take our study halls, weight training, bible classes for christian schools) and then you must maintain that 3.0 or you lose it till you get it back.
so those who would go out of state are far more inclined to remain. actually has made getting into Georgia a HUGE pain in the arse.

They aren't. FSU GPA req's are comparable to their SAT scores. Florida State, along with UF, has quietly become a very reputable academic instutition. Unlike the majority of the SEC. And watch out for UCF...it's one of the biggest schools in the entire country with a rapidly expanding campus and growing research credentials.
This is coming from a current LSU student who grew up in FL, accepted to FSU and rejected from UF (wouldn't have attended anyway, my school simply gave free food for every school you applied to )

I can pull up a bunch of metrics to show you otherwise. FSU is a very solid school now.

i won't argue it. you'd probably know more about it than i. i didn't look much at fsu. i applied all over uga, unc, vandy (for shits and giggles), maryland, psu (where i first went), oregon (why not?), texas, clemson, wisconsin, and alabama

LSU, UF, FSU, UCF, USF, Miami, UVA (shits + giggles) and Tulane.

Hate to say it, but FSU has become better as well. UF has led the charge for the Florida schools, and still gets the top students in Florida, but those that don't go to UF are getting good educations at FSU, UCF, and USF.

i was gonna do uva for fun but i wasn't too thrilled with their campus honestly. and all the students there made me feel like i was at a star trek convention the entire time

I'm not a big fan of USF, at all. Neither the administration nor the academics seem to be headed in the right direction, and when you walk around the "campus" it doesn't even feel like a coherent University. Just a collection of people and buildings...
I'd take UCF any day of the week.
ETA: But Tallahassee wins for best party scene and Greek Life, as well as campus. Gainesville suuucks.

I only laughed because this is the very first time I've ever heard anyone boast about FSU academics. USNews and Business Week don't share the same lofty opinion of them that you have. But if those SAT scores you posted are legit, that's very impressive imho.

heard a lot about UCF (bowl game aside). sounds nice, but FLA just isn't my scene. but i do love jax

I agree with you, I am not a fan of that school either. Feels too much like a commuter school still. But it has become a reputable research institution more so than UCF.

Women's lacrosse, FWIW.
But still, impressive. Both of my teams (ND and OSU) have pretty dominating athletic departments. It's a lot of fun when it's more than just 1 or 2 sports.

What's funny about that is it seems like just yesterday (must have been 02-04) Fireronzook.com
was the ultimate Florida website and man were they roasting Jeremy Foley as being the worst AD in the history of athletics. Amazing how fast times change.

You are ranked highly in most sports, but probably won't win an NC in any of those sports. :boo:
