Would you want your school to fire a coach 2 years into the job?

First of all, I want the record to clearly show that I have always been an Arkansas fan that knows that we should hope to have a coach that can maintain an 8-4 average and hope for the chips to fall right for us every four or five years for more. I even stretch so far as to say that Arkansas should be in the Big 12. So there's that....NOW:

There's no question that Chad Morris has taken a once-flailing program in danger of losing it's identity into depths that most of us never thought possible. He is so in over his head that your average guy off the message board won't even joke about it. Most find it sad in the most literal sense of the word. So... Should Arkansas let him go now? (There's no question about the answer to me. It is an absolute yes. Fire him yesterday.) We talk buyouts, we talk fallout, we talk many reasons about why we should keep Chad for at least 3 years. BUT...there are 3 reasons MINIMUM to fire Chad for every 1 reason there is not to.

If your school is on this steep of decline, what would you want your administration to do? It's getting awfully close to unrecoverable if it isn't there already for us. What are the costs really going to be in this modern CFB landscape.

I see why a coach could be gun shy in theory, but also think any coach with a brain can see just how bad this situation is that leads to a year 2 termination.

Yes.

This is one of those know nothing myths that every coach needs at least 2 years.

The problem is you have bad coaches, decent coaches, and championship level coaches. To me decent coaches are a nightmare for a University. Like Mark Richt. He seemed to always show glimpses of getting his team to the next level but never...never did. Decades later you have wasted your time and money on someone who is just never going to cut it.

Nope, Arkansas should definitely give Chad Morris more time to right the Razorback ship!

Anyone needs time if there are huge problems. Just need to look at how they are playing and decide. I don't watch ark.

For that answer, look to Texas keeping Mack Brown too long. It went from an elite contender to a complete rebuild that will still take several more years.

Everyone says Herman is overrated, but he’s doing exactly what he needs to do to get them there (and I can’t stand Texas).

Saving face is no reason to not cut ties that are dragging the program down.

UF is not known for patience when it comes to proving yourself as a coach. Still surprised Muschamp got that fourth year, but it was because people loved the guy as a person.

Once you realize they won’t get the job done you let them go no matter what year they are in.

Chad sold the exact message Hog fans wanted to hear, he and his staff are just incompetent.

He won an SEC Championship in his second year and another 3 years later. If the CFP would have been a thing in 2002 and 2007 UGa would have been in. He’s 3 or 5 yards from it in 2012. Winning a natty requires some luck, good fortune, a favorable bounce or call or another team folding. If USC doesn’t crap the bed vs UCLA, Meyer and UF don’t get a title shot in 06. If Mizzou and WV don’t lose in 07, LSU doesn’t get in. If Oklahoma St doesnt lose 2011, Bama doesn’t get in. Those were all big upsets.
Richt deserved his years at UGa.

Muschamp would have been in the playoffs in 2012 as well. We were third I think in the final poll before bowls. Sometimes things fall your way as a coach.

Normally no, but if you go 0-16 in conference then there better be a really compelling reason to keep the guy around

If it's Arkansas coach, the magic 8-ball says [yes] no.

You're preaching to the choir.

R.C. Slocum: Overachieved and won the Big 12 in 1998 but was lazy in recruiting and the athletic department didn't do him any favors with facilities, etc. Aside from the 1998 season, Slocum was a combined 44-29 in the Big 12, including blowing 2 17-point 2nd half leads and losing 4 home games in 2002.

Mike Sherman: Had a solid foundation, but choked so hard in 2011 again and again and again and again to the point where there was no salvaging him. Sherman led Oklahoma State 20-3 at halftime. Lost 30-29. He led Arkansas 35-17 at halftime. Lost 42-38. He led Missouri 28-17 mid-4th. Lost 38-31 in overtime. He led Kansas State 24-14 with 2 minutes left in regulation. Lost 53-51 in 4 overtimes. He led t.u. 16-0 in the first half and 16-7 at halftime. Lost 27-25.

Kevin Sumlin: It remains to be seen whether or not he was a decent coach or if he simply squeezed all the life he could out of his predecessor's talent. After Johnny Manziel, Mike Evans, Damontre Moore, 3/4 of the offensive line and 3/4 of the defense that Mike Sherman left him went to the NFL, Sumlin fell apart. At the first sign of adversity, his teams fell apart. 5-0 start in 2014, 3-5 finish. 5-0 start in 2015, 3-5 finish including running off 2 5-star quarterbacks 6 days apart. 7-1 start in 2016, 1-4 finish. Then came a game in which he led 44-10 with 2:17 left in the 3rd quarter and the rest is history. Sumlin is starting off at Arizona the way he finished at A&M.

It's a huge blow for a program to be seen as a revolving door but there are times when keeping him might be worse.
