I thought most weed suspensions were based on university policies not NCAA. I may be wrong but I thought the NCAA rarely tests for recreational drugs.

This may be true.

NCAA site says street drugs are banned, but they only test for:
quote:

Anabolic Agents Diuretics and other masking agents Peptide Hormones and Analogues Anti-Estrogens Beta-2 Agonists

With exception:
quote:

Note: Student-athletes who have had a previous positive result, or had previous multiple dilutes, may be subject to follow-up tests and may be tested with an expanded panel that includes street drugs and stimulants.

Good find! I think they will have to eventually modify it.

quote:

“The legalizing of marijuana in Colorado and Washington does not impact the NCAA drug testing rules,” the statement said. “The NCAA banned drug and testing policies are not tied to whether a substance is legal for general population use, but rather whether the substance is considered a threat to student-athlete health and safety or the integrity of the game.

I just can't see any of this being compelling reason(s) enough to keep it as a banned substance under the NCAA when substances like alcohol aren't restricted by them.

Yes, all sports should be like MLB and not drug test for marijuana.

Great article. I'm curious if anything has changed since it was penned (2012). I also find it interesting that it touched on both alcohol and tobacco.

Hell yes. Smoke up. I hope my team doesn't allow it though. I think it would give us an advantage, however slight. We need all the help we can get.

Absolutely. There is no good reason to test for cannabis.

Its federally illegal. I thought it was the school that looked for that in the tests anyway.

Why not have it conform to the law of the state the school resides in?

Yes and no. I support it but it's also still illegal in the United States and that can lead to having to mix with shady characters. I'm sure most guys have a solid supplier but it would be a much easier endorsement if they could just pop down to the local store and make a risk free legal purchase.

Somebody talk to congress about this. The tax revenue would be tremendous.

Weed should be legal nationwide though that don't necessarily mean it would be approved on campuses.

The fact is the only reason marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug is because it was done to spite the hippies and the black community and that should be rectified.

Look it up if you don't believe me.

Playing on drugs is a time bomb waiting to go off. Like when they use Jute on a horse so can not feel the pain and they get damaged worse. Then you have to put a bullet in their head. Not like that for people but would be long term health cost to be sure.

Besides, to easy for organized crime to get games thrown in their favor.

We can't be distributing any herb to the students without someone testing it first, Just to be sure it's safe.

PED's I understand and fully support those bans, but weed is not a PED. If anything, I think it hurts performance.

I'd actaully support lifting the ban on all drugs that aren't PEDs. That would allow schools to do what they'd rather do and start putting guys who have an actual problem with cocaine, opioids, or what have you into treatment instead of simply hoping they don't fail. If you test positive for a narcotic the response shouldn't be punitive but treatment oriented.
