What I think would be more foolish is one of the P2 having had these discussions when they know that it would be going to court with eventual discovery taking place.
Having colluded to that point would open a P2 to a whole lot of interference.

I don’t really understand fsu and clemson wanting to leave so badly now that the ACC has two guaranteed spots into the expanded playoff’s…

Not sure who the SEC would invite after FSU, Clemson, Miami, and UNC if they go to 24 but I would guess that the following would be in the mix:
North Carolina State
Virginia
Virginia Tech
West Virginia
Louisville
Oklahoma State

FSU is willing to listen to the sec's offer. But we are going to need Kirk Herbstriets head on a pike as a good will gesture first.

FSU gonna take the easy road again.

SEC - 14
B1G - 3

I still struggle to see where the SEC gets more money by adding more teams.
They just added Texas and OU and the payment per team for their TV contract did not increase. Maybe ESPN makes it worth their while, but if they don't I can't see the SEC pulling the trigger on expansion.
The Big 10? Sure. They have a network that they own where adding teams means more content to televise. But the SEC just has network contracts with their providers. They only get more if the contract gets renegotiated.
The SEC contract runs for another decade. Unless ESPN gives the SEC a financial incentive to add teams sooner, I can't see the SEC expanding again before then.

If they add good teams (like Clemson and FSU) that can really drive high ratings for espn then it should give the SEC a tone of bargaining power when the next contract negotiation comes around.

ESPN needs the content that Clemson, FSU, and UNC will bring.
The SEC needs someone new to rework their TV deal/negotiations with the mouse.

The revenue difference per-school compared to the Big Ten is nothing to worry about for the SEC but I firmly believe that the SEC and Big Ten will be picking apart the ACC in the coming years.
I imagine SEC is already back channelling with Clemson, FSU, UNC, and NCST. Remember, they were against adding the additional teams to the ACC though NCST backed off and allowed the other schools to get their additions (likely after the additions agreed to pauperize themselves with bad revenue share distributions until renegotiation with Disney).
Those schools want out, everyone knows they want out but Clemson and FSU are most wedded to football and they're getting left behind relative to all their SEC neighbors on revenue. They can't afford to wait this out like UNC and NCST who are basketball schools that want to compete in football too.

I doubt ESPN wants to lose Clemson and FSU football and UNC and Duke basketball. They may be planting rumors about the B1G to make Sankey nervous and for him to add all 4. If the above schools are going to jump to the SEC then that is the time for it to happen during renegotiations.
I doubt the SEC or the Big10 want Duke. This is football driving the bus.

You would have thought that adding OU and Texas would have increased the per team payout for the SEC. I believe the SEC believed it would happen.
It didn't. SEC teams will be making the same amount per team even with adding two blue bloods
Neither Clemson nor FSU are blue bloods. The SEC might benefit from adding them, but not until negotiating the new contract after the current one expires in a decade.
I don't think the SEC is in a hurry to add anyone. I think if they do they could end up with LESS money per team. That won't fly for the existing members.

quote:What I've seen reported is that ESPN has an option to terminate the current deal with the ACC in 2027. If they don't, it runs to 2036. I suppose they could terminate it and try to beat the ACC down some more on a new deal, but why do that? It might open the door for FSU and Clemson to leave as there is an argument that the grant of rights is tied to that deal. Even if the schools that ESPN wants end up in the SEC, they already have them under contract (at a cheaper rate) in the ACC.
Wondering if that’s as done a deal as folks think. ESPN is scheduled to renegotiate ACC’s GOR next year & that opens a window for them to help SEC nab FSU & Clemson.

P2 B1G could add:
Notre Dame
Stanford
Arizona
Utah
Virginia
Kansas
Teams on the border - Cal, Colorado, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Pitt.

quote:The SEC's deal with ESPN contains a pro rata clause, increasing the payout for any school that the SEC adds on a pro rata basis. What this means is that new members will get the same share as existing members, but existing members get no bump, unless the SEC were to pull a chickenshit move like hazing the new members and only giving them a partial distribution.

Bottom line: adding new members won't give the SEC any basis for reworking the deal with ESPN.

Twenty four. Then we split into four six team divisions.
