2009 Ole Miss won nine games. 1977 Ole Miss went 5-6 despite beating national champ Notre Dame.

quote:Pitt wasn’t that bad. Went 8-5. Beat Penn State and Clemson. Won a bowl. Had Nathan Peterman and ACC player of the year James Conner on the team. All but one of their losses were less than 7 pts.
In recent memory this sure seems like the best choice. That team was simply not very good.

Second worse to VT 2014 beating tOSU.
That Hokie team was AWFUL. Needed a win of Virginia at the end of the season to get bowl eligible.
They went scoreless in regulation against WF and lost in double OT only scoring 3 pts.
It was a loss so bad that it took a 1 loss Big 10 champ winning by 59 in the CCG to sneak into the #4 spot.

VT - 7-6 with wins over two ranked opponents.
Ole Miss - 5-6 with one win over ranked opponent.
Hmmm.

Actually Pitt finished the '16 regular season 8-4 & went on to lose their bowl game. But agreeing with your point - when healthy that Pitt team was capable of playing some reallt good football.

Pitt had one of the best offenses in the country that year with a NFL QB and RB.
Pitt did get a crazy number of phantom pass interference calls tho

Sorry, you’re right they did lose the bowl. Just went back and checked and wow their scores were crazy that year. They did put up points. I had a double take on the Syracuse game. They scored 76 pts in a 4 quarter game. Giving me flashbacks.

The records aren't comparable given the different eras and conference strengths.
1977 ole miss only played 11 games in the regular season. It lost 4 of those games by one score.
2014 VT played 12 regular season games in a schit ACC. They had the same 5-6 record as '77 Ole Miss after 11 games. Vt also lost 4 of those first 11 games by 1 score. But, their schedule was not on par with that of Ole Miss 77, nor their competitiveness.
They essentially were both 5-6 teams. Yet, VT grabbed an FCS win and snuck past some traditional FBS bottom dwellers (scoring no points in regulation vs WF, with only 3 points in the 2OT loss) to get a better overall record with the benefit of more games in a different era.
Hmmmm....

The op’s comment just shows how insufferable some bama fans are. They have got to be the sorest winners i’ve ever seen. A-holes like this don’t deserve a team like bama.

Oh, and the only reason Ole Miss beat the eventual champs that year was that Notre Dame had not yet turned to its new starting quarterback - Joe Montana.
Hmmm.

Good point, but go back and look at Colorado's overall schedule that year. They played seven ranked teams and no games outside of the current Power 5. Out of conference slUT, Stanford, Illinois, Texas, Washington, Notre Dame.

That FSU team left over a third of the team in Tallahassee over an issue with a class. They let UNC completely off the hook for something 10 times worse.
