Will Muschamp. That's always the answer to this question.

Dooley wasn’t the one doing the flirting. AU came begging on bended knee. What UGA fans were happy about was Vince and his family refusing to even consider moving to Auburn. His young son cried and said he hated AU and reportedly Barbara told Vince she hoped he would come and visit the family often if he made the move. The funniest thing was Vince turning down a million dollar contract - an incredibly high salary at the time. I remember seeing Georgia fans sporting signs on their lawns that said “ No way, Auburn. Not even for a million dollars!”

In hindsight, I’m glad Vince didn’t come. Not that I dislike Vince, but he wouldn’t have been bringing Herschel with him and after Herschel, he wasn’t as successful as he had been the prior time at uga or as successful as Dye was from 83 on.

Auburn should have gone after him after Shug retired but Shug wanted them to go with Barfield and they weren’t going to tell him no.

Mike Archer was hired over Steve Spurrier in 1987.

Prolly would have still ended up at Florida.

If I’m to believe the latest documentary on the SEC Network it would be Darrell Royal giving the Wishbone offense to Oklahoma.

ETA: The obvious answer is expanding to 12 teams

SEC is at the very top of college sports. So things would be even better without them? Interesting.

Expansion. Shouldn't have brought in any of the MidWest teams for "money". It isn't worth it

State also passed on Spurrier in '86. He and Bruce Arians were finslists and we hired the running backs coach at Alabama (who was a former QB at State, though)

Hiring Bill Curry and everyone who didn't hire Spurrier has to be up there.

[quote]Shug wanted them to go with Barfield and the weren’t going to tell him no.[/quote
The next year Sports Illustrated had an article about 4 new coaches that year. As I recall, they printed that the administration( AU president) forced the hire of Barfield. Also, staff restrictions had several assistants fired or upset at the hire.
For my fellow fans/alumni I was driving down to the plains on Friday evening in 1988 and I heard the radio announcer say “Now it’s time for the Coach Doug Barfield show”. My heart skipped a beat and I thought the Dye years have only been a dream. Then I realized I was hearing the Opelika High School pregame show for that night.

Immediately after resigning Arnsparger took the AD position at Florida and hired Steve Spurrier in 1990.

To clarify, Arnsparger left LSU after '86. Spurrier's first season at UF was 1990.

Tulane really screwed themselves when they left the SEC, imo.

They thought they were too good and prestigious to be in the conference.

Vandy played their hand better.
