Alabama lost 0-78 to Vanderbilt in the past so not sure how

Probably because when that happened Vandy was a 9-1 team and Alabama was not #1?

Biggest upset in SEC history? Sure. Worst loss in NCAA history? Nah.

I don’t think this is close to the worst of all time. Also, maybe we should let the season play out before we cast judgement on vandy as a team.

I believe a ranked VT team in the Beamer era lost to temple as 50+ point favorite

Alabama has had more opportunities to lose as the #1 team than anyone else. Alabama has been ranked #1 in the AP 141 weeks. Ohio State is 2nd at 105 and Oklahoma is 3rd at 101. Among SEC schools, here are the next best 5 teams.

Georgia: 54
Texas: 48
Florida: 41
LSU: 38
Tennessee: 18

The more games a team plays while ranked #1, the higher the odds they will lose one of them. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Alabama has the most losses while ranked #1.

#2 SC lost to Napoleon McCallum and Navy, in Annapolis, in 1984.

The line for the Bama/Vandy game was 23.5 points. It doesn’t come close to making the top ten biggest upsets of all time. Number one was 45.5, number ten was 32.5.

Top Ten College Football Point-spread Upsets of All Time

I couldn’t find a similar list for just SEC teams, but did find this.

How Vanderbilt’s Upset Win Ranks

quote:

Vanderbilt is the sixth team since 1978 to win as a 23+ point underdog, and the first one to do so since 2008; AP No. 1 teams that are 23+ point favorites are now 244-6 in that span.

Vanderbilt's win as a 23.5-point underdog is tied for the third-largest upset in an SEC conference matchup since 1978.

Alabama entered today's game with a 155-3 record when a 20+ point favorite since 1978 (lost to Georgia Tech (+24) in 1981, LSU (+24) in 1993, and UL Monroe (+24.5) in 2007).

Alabama entered today's game vs Vanderbilt with a 60-2 record against unranked opponents when playing as the AP No. 1 team since 1978 (lost to Texas A&M in 2021 and Mississippi State in 1980).

It isn’t the biggest upset in SEC history. It isn’t even Alabama’s biggest upset in the SEC or top three all time against all opponents. And they aren’t the only AP #1 to lose as a 23+ point favorite. I was surprised to see it has happened 6 times since 1978.

Arkansas lost to North Texas 44-10 at home and has also lost at home to Toledo, San Jose State, and Western Kentucky in the last 10 years. Fortunately for you, none of those were upsets.

Do you remember what South Carolina did the week after they beat #1 Alabama in 2010? They went in and lost to a horrible Kentucky team in Lexington. It was one of only 2 SEC wins for Kentucky that year. Kentucky finished 6-7 that season. South Carolina still managed to win the SEC east.

Everyone still remembers and talks about that Alabama game. No one remembers that Kentucky game.

Hangover games are real.

Kansas over Texas in 2018 or whenever it was needs to be in contention. Not because of how good Texas was, but because of how historically bad Kansas was at the time

wtf game are u talking about??? they beat kansas that year. the nearest losses to that year were in 2016 and 2021 and those games weren't even close to being big upsets-

Texas sucked both those years (like they often do) and lost 7 games in both seasons.

This is an impressive level of coping.

As the #1 team, you got flat out beaten by Vandy. No flukes. No crazy plays. No bad calls. Just flat out beat.

Vandy, for all of their struggles, are at least in the same conference as Alabama. It’s not THAT far of a reach to think a team can beat another team in its own conference

Not an excuse at all no way Alabama should lose that game. Clark Lea is a very good coach and Vandy while not spending as much as the rest of the SEC did hit the transfer portal and up their NIL budget. Their coach pivoted last year and made a change on his philosophy regarding transfers and NIL. What Vandy did to Alabama and Virginia Tech and almost Missouri if they don’t miss that FG was not a fluke. Teams can take Vandy lightly if they choose at their own peril. Three teams have done it and all paid the price.

USC/Stanford. People forget how dominant USC was from about 2002 til 2008.

Yes.they.are.

That is one example for certain.

Another is that in '84, when we lost to Navy in Annapolis, we had just beaten FSU the week before to go 9-0.

Hangover games are definitely real things.

Is it? Or is finebaum a retard?

App state was FCS program and Stanford had like 9 losses that year they upset 40 point USC.

Vandy could realistically win 8 games this year. The QB is a killer

212-0 was way worse.
