Will the committee punish a team for making a championship game?

We know the situation will eventually occur. Maybe this year, if not soon. Maybe in the SEC, maybe in the B1G
A one loss or two loss team makes that conference championship game while another team lower in the rankings with the same record doesn’t.
Will the committee punish them for the loss?
If yes… Does your answer change if the team that lost in the championship has a head to head victory over the other team in discussion?

Didn’t that happen to Georgia just last year??

Last season UGA was undefeated and lost in the SECCG. Missed the playoffs with that one loss . ND if their regular season record was the same would make the playoffs without having to play in a conference championship. Unfair.
Why are the rules always different for the Irish?

Nearly a guarantee to happen every couple of years now

Isn't H2H a tie-breaker?
They punish who?

Not to get into the argument, but FSU.....

I can see a scenario where yes they would. Some would say Georgia last season, but we have 3x the number of teams this year so it's less likely.
Having said that, if the 3rd place team sitting home and watching the CCG has a better quality win and better quality loss (if such exists) than the CCG loser, it could make for a tough decision for the committee...and highly dependent on teams from other conferences.

UGA wins out and goes 11-1. LSU wins out (beating Bama), goes 10-2.
A&M wins out and goes 11-1, undefeated in conference.
A&M goes to Atlanta, and LSU goes. LSU would only have the loss to undefeated A&M in conference, and then has a win over Bama, which UGA lost to.
UGA is easily the 5 seed (best non conference champ) in this scenario, while LSU is in real danger of being left out if they lose a 3rd game. In that case, you might have a 10-2 Texas going instead, along with a 10-2 Tennessee.

How about when another team HIGHER in the CFP rankings doesn't make the CG because of the tiebreaker rules. Especially if said team beat the CG loser head-to-head. In that scenario, the CG loser is most likely eliminated unless there are plenty of open spots.

they'll punish SEC teams only

Yes. If A&M is fortunate enough to make it, it REALLY has to hope it goes in with only the ND loss. In that case, I think we make playoff no matter what.
If we end up 10-3, even after losing a CCG by a fluke last second hail mary, ESPN talking heads will have us out by midnight.

No, they rewarded Texas for winning the conference. The screwed FSU and rewarded Bama for being Bama or Saban retiring or whatever reason.
So no, they did not punish UGA.

yes it will be body of work...you are 1st or 2nd in sec because you werent as tested as others .so you fail in sec because you " werent really where its at " " to begin with as bobby dylan would say ..capiche?

From what I remember, ND almost has to have a perfect record with high quality wins to even make the PO.
Posted on 10/28/24 at 6:51 pm to msutiger
If memory serves, aren't they adjusting the PO to include BOTH CCG teams?
I agree that it's unfair for the CCG loser to miss the PO.
