Depends on what you call mediocre...
Since Bowden's last appearance in the BCSCG in 2000 season, he only had one 10 win season and finished 7-6 multiple times. After the 80's, Paterno was only really in the running for one other national championship (1994). Paterno then had several losing seasons in the early 2000's but rebounded with a couple of Big 10 co-championships; he was competing reasonably well in the Big 10 a couple of years before he was forced out...
Since 2008, Saban has won 10+ games every season, only lost more than 2 games once, and has finished in the top 10 every year; he also has more national championships than Bowden and Paterno combined. So what's mediocre for him? Only winning 10? Point being mediocre for Saban may look different than mediocre for Bowden or Paterno.
I remember the down years after the Bear and then after Stallings. Personally, for what Saban's done for football at Alabama, I'd let him coach there for as long as he damn well pleases...

Paterno was doing pretty well before Sandusky imploded the program iirc

Then why did Alabama build a statue of him?
All the coaches with a NC get a statue. Wade, Thomas, Bryant, Stallings, and Saban.

For what exactly? Alabama has been a mediocre football program post WWII without Bryant and Saban, and Saban just won’t be highly successful forever. Everyone slows down eventually as much as retarded Alabama fans (who kill people over the slightest hiccup in your program’s success and probably suffer from some type of collective narcissistic personality disorder) won’t admit that.
No one is scared of Alabama anymore, whether Saban stays or goes. Y’all’s time has come and gone

AMEN
I was at Bama during those years, Perkins and Curry and it was bad! Had to suffer all the years of Curry never beating aubarn.
Non Alabama fans have no idea what Saban means to the University of Alabama. The engineering professor my son was visiting when he was considering attending UofA explained how the whole new engineering complex was built due to dollars brought in by Nick Saban!
BYW, the engineering complex is home to the 4 time National Champions of the NASA Robotic Mining Competition. Some people do care about the quality of the education.
Thank you Nick Saban, even from the professors!

Now this is a hot take.
Let’s pretend this is true. That’s still 38 years under Bryant and Saban.

Will he stay way too long and have a bunch of mediocre seasons, but be impossible to fire because of his past success?
Seems doubtful. Saban can barely handle losing one game a year. He won't stick around long losing multiple games and/or going multiple seasons without a Conference/NC championship/playoff appearance.
I actually suspect if he is able to win one more NC he will retire at that time. But if he can't get it done in the next 3-4 years he will retire anyway.
Next year will be a rebuild on offense but the defense should be better. Probably not a favorite to win the NC though. If recruiting goes well 2021 could be another run with what should be a somewhat veteran team (by Alabama standards) on both sides of the ball. All the freshmen playing on defense right now will be juniors.
Saban is probably now recruiting some of the last players he will see graduate at Alabama most likely.

You just removed more than half of the time period you are talking about.
By the way since you are an LSU fan you might be interested to know that in the time frame you are talking about (post WWII when neither Bryant nor Saban were coaching Alabama) Alabama still had more SEC championships than LSU. Talk about mediocre.

It absolutely was 38 years under Bryant and Saban. And y’all have still been incredibly average without them.
Without Bryant and Saban, y’all have won 10+ games in just 11 out of 38 seasons since WWII, and 4 of those came in Stallings’ 7 year tenure.
Bryant won 10+ games 14 times by himself, and Saban won 10+ games 11 times in 12 seasons for reference.
So again, I know that you’re way too delusional to see things clearly, but Alabama has not been very good in modern times with coaches not named Saban or Bryant. We can debate this all day long because I’m right, and you’re a delusional gump who’s wrong and will never admit that your glorious football program has been propped up by 2 coaches.
I just think it’s funny to point out the reality of your program while 90% of your sidewalk fans, such as yourself, pretend that you can win with anyone as HC.

But guess what? We did have them!
Alabama has had 2 greatest coaches in college football history! NO other school, especially yours, can claim that!

So you're saying you were scared of Alabama for the 7 seasons prior to this one?

Y’all’s time has come and gone
People said that after the Kick 6, then after each of the two losses to Ole Miss, and then after the first loss to Clemson; our time has come, it's yet to be seen if our time has gone. But if it has, it was a helluva ride; 5 national championships in 9 years has never been achieved before in the poll era...and it's not likely to be repeated any time soon...

No.
Bowden became CEO and a figurehead.
Paterno was done in by scandal.
Saban will be done in by either of those circumstances

This may be the single dumbest take I’ve seen. You’re discrediting two coaches, which make up 38 of the 74 years since the end of World War II in order to make some point about Alabama being “mediocre”.
Are you considering Harold Drew, Billy Curry, and Gene Stallings winning conference titles as mediocre? Stallings national title was mediocre?
Even when taking out Bryant and Saban’s combined 382 wins, you’re left with 246 wins at Alabama for a winning percentage of .602. That’s mediocre?

No one is saying y’all didn’t it’s more of a reflection of your resources as a program than your stupid fanbase realizes. Their success has nothing to do with my response to the original post for the moron rednecks who are just jumping in the conversation and screaming but “BEAR AND SABAN HAPPENED LOL”.
One of your fans said that we should pray that Saban turns into Joe Paterno. My response was that it’s irrelevant either way, because Saban will likely see less success going forward than the single greatest run in the history of college football, or y’all will go back to mediocrity under other coaches. Those are your two options based on the history of your football program. Hopefully that gives some context to your small brain fanbase who I know didn’t bother to read the entire response chain
I’m not saying that their championships don’t count, I’m saying that Alabama doesn’t have “elite program” resources. Y’all are more of a “Clemson under Dabo” type program who sees success in spite of its limited resources due to phenomenal coaching and an administration who will do anything to win in football, than an Ohio State who will be a powerhouse no matter what.

From what I've heard, Perkins was a really good recruiter, just struggled with the transition to a pro-style offense and other SEC teams improving since 1980 or so. Then Curry coasted on what he'd built

No I’m not. You’re a babbling perpetually triggered idiot who isn’t worth responding to. Sorry that you’re too stupid to grasp my point
