There's been an aggressive, anti-Ole Miss smear campaign going on for the better part of 40 years now by the rest of the SEC with Mississippi Butthurt Univeristy taking the lead role.

Wow... That's Alabama/Auburn level hate and black helicopters.

See guys, it's not just us!

Does Ole Miss have an English department? Is basic English mandatory?

You're right. I mean, Floyd Raven didn't just say YESTERDAY that people told him not to go to OM because it was racist or anything.

Alabama/Auburn paranoia is lacking of evidence, hence the mockery. There are mountains of evidence showing that other schools routinely tell potential student athletes that Ole Miss is racist. Just read Willie Morris' book on Marcus Dupree and you'll see that it happened then just as it still happens today.

To be fair, most southerners think of Mississippi that way as well.

Some of you will snicker and guffaw and post stupid childish animated emoticons at this, but Ole Miss' English department is perhaps the best in the SEC. We attract a lot of great English professors because of our literary tradition. Hell, Willie Morris and Barry Hannah, accomplished, award-winning writers and native Mississippians, taught creative writing and literature courses at Ole Miss for something like 30 years collectively (Hannah died this year, Morris about 10 years ago... I have no Earthly idea how they can be replaced).

I have just one thing to say : Jefferson Davis was actually from Kentucky.

Yes he was born there. But they moved when he was very young. Grew up in Warren Co Miss. As an adult he had a plantation there called Briarwood.
He made his first political speech on the steps of the Old Courthouse in Vicksburg. Commanded the Mississippi Rifles during the Mexican War.
Elected to Congress from MS. After secession was named General of MS troops before becoming President.Beaviour was his home for about 20 years. He died while in NOLA and was buried in Metaire Cemetery. Later he was moved to Richmond.

Spoken like a true nincompoop. I absolutely detest that argument because it supposes that what the Ole Miss administration did was somehow unusual or without precedent. University administrations make all kinds of decisions that affect students and alumni alike all of the time, and they do so without soliciting votes or popular opinions. You know why? Because that's their fricking job.

What makes you think that Ole Miss' or anybody's administration should put such decisions up to a referendum?

Furthermore, do you think every decision should be left to the majority? Because, were that the case, emancipation, women's suffrage, nor the Civil Rights Act would have taken place when they did.

Do you think that everything the Supreme Court decides should be left up to a popular vote? Do you think everything a president or governor signs or vetoes should be left up to a popular vote? Do you think the decisions made by CEOs and head football coaches should be left up to popular vote?

Leaders are chosen to lead for a reason: to make the tough decisions, even if they're unpopular, because they need to be made.

Extremely well said.

Yes, but he then moved back to Kentucky attend Transylvania University and stayed for about 10 additional years. All in all he spend 30 years of his ~80 in Kentucky. He also had a plantation here.

if you study the plantation owners of mississippi in the mid 1800's, you will notice the VAST majority of plantation/slave owners were of northern heritage (eg: ny bankers.) this also holds true for louisiana.

there were MANY white southerners who did not back the military answer of fighting for the rich to keep money. the slavery issue is just a baiting of the poor to keep them down.

imho

This is why, as Ole Miss fans, we find it pretty fricking frustrating when any of y'all (especially State fans) try to point fingers at us as if your schools are any better with race relations.

Just let me add that I've never piled on ole miss about race issues b/c I believe it does represent the state as a whole. Whats even more fricking ridiculous is having other people from the states of LA, ARK, AL trying to pile on too without checking their own inventory. Ole miss is doing the right thing and the sad part is it seems you're getting more ridiculed instead of praised for doing it.

Kentuckians are proud to claim Davis, as well as John Hunt Morgan, John Bell Hood, Edmund Kirby Smith and all the other generals from Kentucky.

Kentucky probably has just as many Confederate memorials/statues as any other state.

I didn't read the wall of junk the OP put up. Just had to put in that the majority of the students are huge col reb fans. And I for one will only see him as our mascot and do will my children.I've talked to athletes in my classes they don't even care one but.

The majority of our message board fans I have never met real fans like them. So rant please don't think that we all feel this way.

most of us are proud if our traditions

Cdawg, you know that you're in the clear when it comes to most of our frustration at Mississippi State fans. Most of the Bulldawgs here on the Rant are good folks, probably the type of folks I would enjoy drinking and watching ball with.
