Now explain why Ole Miss picked a damn black bear?

Couldn't they have gone with something along the lines of the Patriots mascot? I don't have an answer, but I'm not comprehending a black bear.

Why does it matter whether or not you comprehend it?

I mean, shite, I don't understand why y'all are the Tigers but I don't find it abhorrently absurd to the point that I'm walking around demanding an explanation of it.

But he represented Mississippi in the Senate. It's sorta like how Obama was born in Hawaii but represented Illinois in the Senate. I think it's fair that both can claim him.

It's the home he retired to and eventually died in... Beauvoir in Biloxi.

Is stupidest a word or should it be most stupid? I guess that would say it all. I am a LSU grad from New Jersey working in New York. I, for one, always respected Ole Miss tradition including Colonel Reb and Dixie.

This is where you are wrong. MS State is larger, more public and much more open to ALL the people of the State of Mississippi. Unfortunatly, the nation will always see you as the school that had your racist toys taken away from you while you were kicking and screaming about it.

Size doens't determine a flagship, I don't know what you mean by "more public", and I really don't know what you mean by "much more open to ALL the people of the State of Mississippi."

You really need to read a fricking book, pal.

Yes. Chill out . No need to be so uptight.

I was just saying, I'd consider someone to be "from" where they are born if they spent a considerable amount of their life there.

Just because I was okay with the administration's decisions to retire the mascot doesn't mean I don't respect the tradition.

And to answer your initial question, stupider IS in fact a word. People that go "hur hur hur it's actually 'more stupid' you moran" actually don't know what they're talking about. Both are acceptable.

i dont need to chill,

i expect people in mississippi to claim things that aren't theirs- like the 2003 west championship.

and to the OP- there are plenty of racist people in your state. and mine. is it the 1960's? NO. but it is there

There are racist people in every state. Ole Miss just isn't Ole Miss this way. It's like any SEC team forgetting that at one time ALL their teams were segregated. In 1958, LSU had the Go team white team. Hell the whole school was white.

I live in a city that fashions itself as one of the most progressive and forward-thinking in America, and I've heard and seen bigotry here.

Bigotry, greed, selfishness, and dishonesty are inheirent traits of ALL of humanity. It's a shame, but it's just the way it is.

I agree, but let's not forget some of the most racist cities that exist today are in the NE. Boston is a huge one.

Well LSU didn't integrate until 1963 if I'm not mistaken. That's the same year that Alabama and Auburn integrated as well. What's interesting there is that all of those integrations were a full year AFTER Ole Miss' integration.

Mississippi State, as one would expect, was the straggler, allowing their first black student in 1965. This is why, as Ole Miss fans, we find it pretty fricking frustrating when any of y'all (especially State fans) try to point fingers at us as if your schools are any better with race relations. There's been an aggressive, anti-Ole Miss smear campaign going on for the better part of 40 years now by the rest of the SEC with Mississippi Butthurt Univeristy taking the lead role. That's why some of us on here are pretty fricking testy with y'all when the race issues are brought up; we're sick and tired of being YOUR whipping boy. We're not going to sit idly by and have you point fingers at us just so you can conveniently ignore your own problems anymore.

JEAUXBLEAUX, this was addressed in general, not specifically at you, just so you know.

You're the flagship university of the dumbest state in the nation. Not something to brag about.

Especially when "Ole Miss" is what the slaves would call the wife of the plantation owner....

Spoken like a true nincompoop. I absolutely detest that argument because it supposes that what the Ole Miss administration did was somehow unusual or without precedent. University administrations make all kinds of decisions that affect students and alumni alike all of the time, and they do so without soliciting votes or popular opinions. You know why? Because that's their fricking job.

What makes you think that Ole Miss' or anybody's administration should put such decisions up to a referendum?

Furthermore, do you think every decision should be left to the majority? Because, were that the case, emancipation, women's suffrage, nor the Civil Rights Act would have taken place when they did.

Do you think that everything the Supreme Court decides should be left up to a popular vote? Do you think everything a president or governor signs or vetoes should be left up to a popular vote? Do you think the decisions made by CEOs and head football coaches should be left up to popular vote?

Leaders are chosen to lead for a reason: to make the tough decisions, even if they're unpopular, because they need to be made.
