Purple and Gold.

LSU selected P&G to make badges and rosettes to put on their uniforms for the first LSU-Tulane game in 1893. It was close to Mardi Gras and the local department store didn't have any Green ribbon in stock, so they bought up all the P&G.

First LSU President Col. David F. Boyd (1865-1880, 1884-1886) had originally selected Blue & White as the school colors, but that was overridden by the 1893 Purple and Gold ribbon selection.............

Texas at one time had a bit lighter orange and then Darrell Royal darkened the uniform color a bit so it would match the football better.

I've read that several places... but I've also read that at some point Texas had to change colors to the lighter orange because they couldn't get their normal dye due to the war.

To be honest I always thought that Texas was burnt orange because that is a predominant color seen in cattle.

As far as OU... apparently some faculty members and students picked out crimson and cream...

But I've often wondered if they picked it because the state name is "Red People" in Choctaw.

Although there have been efforts to actually make the basketball unis "cream" a couple of times. Our secondary color has always been white because cream is just dull white. I think they liked cream because of the alliterative flow of "crimson and cream"...

More like the crimson because of all the bleeding vaginas.

Garnet and black are the colors of an actual gamecock.

Though the mascot is named after Gen Thomas Sumter, and not the bird itself.

UK was originally Yellow & Blue but Eskimo pussy is mighty cold.

Sewanee was the "Classic" Purple Tigers. LSU is "New Coke" Tigers

Tennessee fans have a weird dynamic when it comes to Texas. I can't tell you how many Tennessee fans want to insist to me "We're the real UT" unsolicited, when I don't really care.

This is just more of the same.

Arkansas students chose pink. But they faded in the sun so the school went with cardinal red instead.

Nah man, as the old hymn says sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow.

It's official name is "Big Red" and it has a significant place in the school's history.

quote:

The "Big Red" flag is a historical artifact and a symbol of pride for The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina. It is a red flag with a white palmetto tree and crescent moon, and it's believed to be the flag that flew over Morris Island when Citadel cadets fired on the Star of the West in 1861, considered the first shots of the Civil War. The flag was rediscovered in an Iowa museum after being donated by a Civil War veteran and was returned to The Citadel on loan.

I thought the story with LSU is that a coach went to buy leftover Mardi gras ribbon to decorate the jerseys with and they only had purple and gold. They were out of green.

States story is simple. The captain of the first football team chose maroon and white. The first nickname was the Maroons.

In 1938 football coach Spike Nelson secretly had cardinal and gold uniforms made for State, a selection that did not sit well with the team or the college at the first game. Neither the uniforms nor Nelson were back for the next season.

For Ole Miss, first head coach, Bondurant, wanted to honor the two Ivy League schools, Harvard and Yale, so red and blue it was.

It was the color of the flowers growing on the hill (which is behind where they built Neyland Stadium).

Purple is associated with royalty. Yellow is associated with cowardice.

Combine them and you have the color scheme for royal pussies.

LSU colors were blue and white. Back in the day, they were trying to find blue and white parts stuff, streamers, etc. because it was around Mardi Gras, they went with purple and gold. At least that is what I have always heard.

All of the red derivations in the SEC suck. It is boring.
