Why is paying Jimbo $75 million a big deal?

For this money he has to coach for A&M for years. People just act like he took our money and left town.

Say he stays five years. That is the minimum I think without a scandal. That comes out to $15 million a year for Jimbo. When the SEC pays out $40.9 million a year, that means we spent about 37% of our TV revenue on Jimbo in a worst case scenario.

In 2007 the SEC paid out $10.2 million and Bama paid Nick $4 million a year. That means they paid Nick 39% of their TV revenue, or more than the Jimbo worst case scenario! And that wasn’t the Bama worst case scenario either, it was their best case one of him completing the contract which didn’t happen.

If Jimbo stays seven years of his ten year deal, we only spent 27% of our tv revenue on the contract! And we gave Sumlin six years so it could happen!

Bama paid what needed to be paid to compete in 2007, and we did similar today. $75 million isn’t an out of the world deal, as the value of college football increases so do those coaching it.

tl:dr A&M spends less than Bama on coaching salaries historically and people still get offended because ?

$75 million contract is not that big a deal....

$75 million guaranteed is a huge risk.

No I broke it out guaranteed. Guaranteed just means we have to pay it.

Worst case we have to pay it in say over five years, and at that rate it’s $15 million a year. We could pay that completely out of revenue coming in. It’s not unmanageable.

It is actually right around market price if you look at it on a per year basis (and you should).

For example, Gus at Auburn. We all know them, he could legit get fired in two years and that’s that. His contract is over 50% guaranteed, so if he is fired in two years he will make over $12 million a year and he hasn’t even won a national title. If Harbaugh gets fired this year he will have made more money per year than Jimbo in a worst case scenario for us which means we aren’t even setting the high water mark for the sport.

People lack perspective I think.

Kirby got a bonus, he's up to $16 an hour now.

In that perspective, Jimbo is overpaid.

But it's yalls money, yall do what you want. None of my business.

Relax, LSU fans are just jealous because they couldn't afford him. Y'all got the money, enjoy it.

6.5 actually

To OP I think it's a perception issue. A top tier coach probably won't take the A&m job without guaranteed big money

That’s the thing- in the modern era no college football head coach with a national title has gone from one college football program to another without a year off or in the NFL. Johnny Majors went back to his school in 1977, but outside of that it doesn’t happen. There is no market rate if there is no market.

The closest thing in modern history is Saban going to Bama, and as I proved it is still below that deal compared to the tv revenue at the time. And Bama is a historically much better program than us, so in a way we got a discount!

Here is the bottom line: we got the guy we wanted. First try, first offer, with money we were happy to pay and thanks to Arky taking a run at Gus is now average in the SEC per year.

It just isn’t a big deal, all it shows is we are committed to giving Fisher his time to build a program and we aren’t demanding immediate success.

Being in the top ten highest money making athletic depts, I never got the "LSU can't afford ____" jokes, but it's whatever, I guess.

There's a perception out there that minus Jameis Winston he is far from an elite coach, and he's getting elite coach money. Guaranteed.

Without Jameis Winston, he is 56-22 with 2 division titles, 1 conference title, 2 top ten finishes, 5 top 25 finishes and a 4-1 bowl record.

That 56-22 mark over 6 seasons is better than Kevin Sumlin's 51-26 mark over 6 seasons.

So now we're comparing him to the guy that just got fired? That's bizarre. Let's compare him to the elite coaches since he's being payed like one.

It's a big deal because A&M guaranteed the money to a guy who just had his worst year as a head coach, had countless off-the-field issues with his players, has tons of personal and family problems, and looks like he's aged 30 years in the last 5.

He has a natty, yes. But I don't think anyone believes he is still in his prime. That's why it's a big deal.

What’s bizarre is penalizing him for recruiting and developing an elite QB. And even if you eliminate those seasons, he still has a better record than the guy we fired.

No one is offended. We just think that is silly to pay a coach who is clearly not better than Saban, more than Saban.

I'm not going to take the time to do it but it would be great to see what ever Coach's record is without their best QB. Obviously Saban and Urban are going to be higher than Jimbo.

We’re comparing him after taking away his best seasons for no good reason while not taking away the other coaches seasons and jimbo is still better.

Should we compare to Mullen?
