Part of that is because, long-term, we haven't shelled out a whole lot of money in salaries for the sports staffs -- UGA's always been conservative in that area going way back
Kind of a drop in the bucket compared facility upgrades but the McGill Society has stepped up big time to control our long term debt with those projects.

You have to subscribe to see that article so I have no idea where they come up with that list. Here is a more relevant one from 247. A&M is 2nd in Revenue to Texas ($212 million to $223 million) but we have traded places with them off and on since the stadium rebuild that sent the dollars off the chart. A&M runs a higher profit margin though at $169 million in expenses vs $207 million.
Ranking the AD's by Revenue
The other mention about the debt is just stupid. Yes we have debt on our stadium that is being paid back just like any other school, we are selling out and making money so it is not a concern. No school has $500 million or so sitting in a checking account to buy a stadium.
So A&M and Texas both have a lot of money but money doesn't always mean wins. No real fan would rather look at an AD balance sheet over winning championships. That said money certainly helps and NIL will make that even more glaring.
BTW:
Georgia is 5th with $174 mill
Bama is 7th with $164 mill
OU is 8th with $163 mill
Florida is 9th with $159 mill
LSU is 10th with $157 mill
Auburn is 13th with $152 mill
Kentucky is 15th with $150 mill
Tennessee is 16th with $143 mill
South Carolina is 17th with $140 mill
Arkansas is 20th with $137 mill
The SEC (esp adding Texas and OU) dominates the list. Virtually all the rest are B1G schools, thus the Super Conferences to come are obvious.

Sooner also means land thrives. Us took Texas as a state then took a lot of Texas land, the price to be a state

247's recruiting rankings are suspect. I wouldn't put too much faith in their financial analysis.
A&M has money, but revenue and donations are totally different things.

Colorado St sticks out on that list.

Plenty of money in the Oklahoma Panhandle oil wise. A lot of government land up that way. Texas was wise to give it up. As a thank you, there is a county named for your state.
That's pretty cool info.

Why is OU so poor?
From the OU president's letter to the university.
quote:
Without this bold move, we risk seriously weakening our athletics program even to the point of needing to look to the academic arm of the university, or our state government, to subsidize athletics. We refuse to let that happen.
So I am guessing all the Aggies forgot why they joined the SEC 10 years ago?
A&M Athletic Dept in debt

A&M built a $500 million stadium, of course we have debt. Our revenues went through the roof when we did it though. By imploding the West Stands they essentially were able to buy out all the decades long contracts where people got prime seating because they bought season tickets in the 70's and put it in their Grandkids names. So the reset allowed them to do everything on 10 and 15 year leases at current market rates. They also put in volumes of suites and club level seating they can charge insane rates for while still having a ton of seats that are still affordable. Then those leases will expire and they get to up them again. They also included a one time build fee.
A&M has flaws but the way they built and financed the renovated Kyle Field is not one of them. It's a world class venue now that has a great CFB environment and absolutely prints money. Most sips have not been to Kyle lately.
Combine that with the increased size of the school and the alumni that produces (with a ton in the O&G business) and it literally is hard to not make stupid money.
Once again though winning is 1000x sweeter than having a nice stadium to watch mediocre football. The investment is starting to pay off but it takes time, money helps.

How about:
USA Today
BTW, if you want to look at bad debt the worst is money spent on buying coaches out of contracts and often getting another coach and then repeating the cycle. Better to just buy a top notch guy and lock him up rather than paying for old coaches that are long gone.

No doubt the late 2000s were a dark time for Aggie football and athletics. We were mediocre and had crap leadership. Hell Byrne was against the SEC move and wanted to reduce the size of Kyle not expand it. It was the end of the Fran era and beginning of Sherman. Fortunately Loftin became our President and started making bold moves and got the ship turned around. Now the fundamentals are rock solid financially and we just need to focus on winning.

Texas sought to carve an independent territory from a foreign entity. The Oklahoma territory was already federal land. It is less troublesome that persons sought independence from Mexico than blatantly trying to cheat you own countrymen. Cheating your own countrymen out of an opportunity to get land in the expansion is far worse. Oklahomans are despicable cheaters and they will never live that down.
Lol.
US took Texas from Mexico, by imperialistic annexation after Mexico opened their land to us. Pretty crappy thing to do.
