Yeah, this is a good point lots of LSU fans need to step back and understand.

Yes, every fan wants his team to be the dynasty. Yes, we love to troll each other.

But for LSU fans to turn on Kelly the way they'd been doing this year- insanity. LSU had become a raging dumpster fire in 2020 and 2021, and shite looked real bad. REAL bad. We've seen Nebraska drop off the face of the earth, Tennessee, Miami, Texas all spend a decade wandering in the desert, Auburn and Florida dropping to the bottom of the SEC...
You take your 10 win coach with the big recruiting class incoming, and the current "disappointing season" (oh by the way ranked every week and currently up to #8, so it ain't that fricking bad), and you keep building.

Literally that and Tony V are why LSU fans are so obsessed with all things Tennessee

Lol I’m pretty sure it’s because we sucked arse forever then won the SEC after a long drought. Doesn’t have anything to do with Tenner

Tennessee is 5-1 for only the third time in the last 20 years and just beat Florida for only the third time in 20 years. Fans are griping. Worrying about next week and the week after that. Very little joy.

The goal obviously is to win a championship. But I think fans used to enjoy individual wins WAY more than they do now.

You'd go out and get the school newspaper for a huge win over a rival. Everyone buzzing about it. You had a bunch of guys who had learned to hate that rival school over their time at yours... now they might transfer there after the season and everyone is all buddy buddy because of the 7on7 and camp circuits.

Everyone thinks NIL 'ruined' college football, but IMO there are a lot of things that have been 'chipping away' at it for a long time

I think the hyperfocus on championships (and the playoff expansion cranking that focus up to 11) is ultimately a bad thing for the individual fan's enjoyment since only 1 in 130 or so teams wins it in a given year, and realistically only 10 or so teams have a legitimate shot to win it. Making a NY6 bowl was a successful season by any measure in the past, even some of the lesser bowls were.

Growing up means not putting the Gamecocks on TV, because I realize I will become irrationally upset watching them play. Can't tell if that makes me more mature, or less.

Not Texas fans. This year Texas fans > Bama fans of old.

“Older fans gripe just as much anybody and just as likely to start worrying about next week after the week after that right after a big win.“

Yeah that game was considered a lock for Tennessee to play for a title but Saban said” not so fast”.

Well, deciding to avoid emotional triggers is always more mature, although not getting triggered in the first place is best.

But heck it’s a great time of year, so if the team is shitting the bed, there’s a lot of good things to do on the weekends

you nailed it: championship or bust mentality, recruiting process, and transfer ability are the biggest to me.

When it was the days of just “beat your rival on Saturday”, it was at its purest. Every game was a battle for bragging rights for fans and team members alike in the community, and there was nothing topping that.

Now, there’s a greater goal, a bigger test “next week”, a larger agenda, etc. (recruiting success, winning conference, making a bowl, making the playoff).

The catalyst that I believe jump-started all of this to reach a now unsustainable place was the explosion of media value (leading to more televised games, therefore more bowls, post-season development) that catalyzed the inevitable break-down of regional isolation and balanced regional pride.

Probably sometime around NCAA v. OU Board of Regents (1984) was the beginning of the end.

People are stupid. Especially on the internet. We beat Florida and Oklahoma. I’m happy our program is so much better than it used to be. I can’t stand how entitled some of our fans are
