Why is it so hard for some schools to find a rival?

There's been a lot of chatter on the SECrant this past year about this, that or the other team searching for a rival. We don't even need to name them, we all know who those teams are. What's odd is that if there are so many teams looking for a rival, why don't they just become each other's rival?

There are teams in the league who have decades, even century long rivalries with teams they face yearly. Why would teams without a rival think that those teams with established rivalries would want to pickup a matchup with a new team and start a new rivalry? What's in it for them?

There are 4 teams in the SEC who don't have a yearly rivalry match.

Bama v Auburn
UF vs FSU
SC vs clemson
UGA vs Ga Tech
Tenn vs Vandy
Ole Miss vs Miss St
Kentucky vs Louisville (is that game going to continue, what's the story here? not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely asking)

So why don't the 4 teams just start a new rivalry with each other, I bet they'll play each other every year and their geography just might allow for it too?

UGA is full, they have 3-6 rivalries, almost the same situation with UF. SC has 1 rival, that's enough. Bama can't be everyone's rival, that's not fair to them or to the teams that would claim them as a rival, but Bama really doesn't give a shite about.

I'm just suggesting that some of the teams out there who are looking for rivalries stop going after teams that have established rivalries already. It's not like there aren't other schools out there searching for a rival too, we just have to help them find each other.

We have 3 legit, real, long time permanent rivals.

We have 1 other that is kinda a rival for a few decades.

We have another that thinks we're rivals. Probably because we're #2 on their list, but they're only like 5th or 6th on ours.

Last time we tried to be rivals with LSU they ran.

So I guess we can rekindle our Arky fire?

Although not having a rival is awesome. I like it that way.

UGA is not #2 on our list.

I assume that is S. Carolina and we are the kinda a rival.

GT/UF/AU

UT

SC

The "few decades" should have told you it had nothing to do with SC. That game has only been a "rivalry" since 2005, and only because of their coach. Actual rivals don't come and go depending on the HC.

In the 80s and mid 90s UGA/Clemson was FIERCE. Really underrated rivalry, and we've played quite a bit. But we stopped playing each other so that kinda went away. It also helped that in the early 80s we were 2 of the premier programs in America. Also we own the series 41-18

Bama v Auburn - Same State
UF vs FSU - Same State
SC vs clemson - Same State
UGA vs Ga Tech - Same State
Tenn vs Vandy - Same State
Ole Miss vs Miss St - Same State
Kentucky vs Louisville - Same State

Decent teams in the same state.

LSU has Tulane, La Tech, and ULL to choose from and they all have spurts of being close to semi-relevant but are never very good.

If you don't have a natural in state rival, you needed to be a historically good team to be someone's rival

Arkansas and Missouri don't fit these qualities

It's this kind of thinking that's going to keep them from finding each other as suitable rivals. What if they just lowered the expectations and decided, "hey, this team is pretty close to us geographically and there's a good chance our fans interact on a daily basis, we should make this happen."

dafuq is wrong with yall? Obviously the 2nd tier one is UT. Of course we're not #2 on your list, although I'd guess we're 3rd. Here's where I guess UGA stacks up on other teams' rival list:

GT- 1
UF- 1 or 2, probably depends on age of fan
AU- 2
SC- 2
UT- 3

People love to hate us for some reason.

Agreed. I don't get why people make such a big deal over them

I'm not sure why you think we want a rival so bad.

Things are just dandy the way they are, the Arkansas thing is a bit contrived, but give it a couple decades. It might blossom.

There are lots of possibilities, I don't think we're too worried about the natural progression of things. These things take time to develop.
