here is the truth....Both teams were having down years and not bowl eligible.....

When hard shell helments came out, neither Mississippi team could afford them. For a surprise to their student athletes the mama's of the players were asked to contribute egg bowls for the players on each team to wear for protection. These egg bowls were distributed before the game.
Over the years it has become a myth that the winning teams players were awarded with new egg bowls to wear.

In truth both teams players were bought new egg bowls to wear before this game which was later deemed an ncaa violation, so it was decided the egg bowls would be considered "trophies" so neither team would be penalized.

The game has since been called the "Egg Bowl"
