re: Why does everyone think Arkansas has a great running game?

Good points about the defense and in-conference YPC rankings. I'm tempted to agree with you now that their run game is somewhat over rated.
I guess it really is probably just about style of play like you mentioned in your first post. Everyone knows they heavily favor the run, and they are still able to run with relative success.
Just curious about where you're able to find the conference-only stats? I'd be interested in knowing if there are east teams who rank ahead of them in YPC just because of relatively weak SOS compared to Arkansas. That's the only other explanation I can think of

I use cfbstats.com

Georgia, mizzou, and USCe haven't faced bama or state which are two of the best rush defenses

Arkansas runs against a stacked box every time for the most part. LSU was the most effective Allen has been in the passing game all year it seemed like. When you are constantly running against a stacked box your numbers will go down. It's not like we are running a Draw out of shotgun with the field spread.
And it's because that we have been effective *for the most part* running against stacked boxes that we get the nod for a good/great running team.

Good thing Arkansas and Mizzou play in 2 weeks and we won't have to speculate anymore.

So you're suggesting that coaches gameplan and scheme against things their opponents do well?
The devil you say?
Nobody has ever considered that a factor in any game before.

Awesome site, thanks to you and Sarcastro. Looks like a ridiculous number of ways to parse data on there

Similarly to when we shut down the #1 WR in the land

Mizzou's biggest advantage is that our offense only has to go against our defense in practice. Our rush defense is allowing a conference low 3.0 YPC in conference games.

That game instigated changes on both sides of the ball and the results speak for themselves.

sounds like you guys are trying really hard to convince yourselves you'll handle our running game.

Do you even know who Arkansas is?
Posted on 11/18/14 at 12:36 pm to Sarcastro
quote:
They are 8th in rushing yards per carry in conference play. Their overall yards per carry is so high because of their non-con. Specifically, because they ran for 495 yards at 12.4 yards per carry against Nicholls State.
Our yard per game isn't great because we don't break off a lot of long runs. But we're very efficient at running the ball, very seldom getting stopped for a loss or no gain. Even if we don't get a lot of yards, our offense tends to take a lot of time off the clock with slow, methodical drives.

Yeap, our defense wasn't that great in our non-con. Statistically, we're pretty much superior in every way in conference games than we were in the non-con:
Total defense:
Non-con: 390 yards per game (#14 in SEC) and 5.23 yards per play (#12 in SEC)
Conference games: 306.5 yards per game (#2 in SEC) and 4.2 yards per play (#1 in SEC)
Scoring defense:
Non-con: 20.8 points per game (#13 in SEC)
Conference games: 19.7 points per game (#3 in SEC)
Rushing defense:
Non-con: 149 yards per game (#13 in SEC) and 3.9 YPC (#13)
Conference games: 119 YPG (#3) and 3.0 YPC (#1)
Passing defense:
Non-con: 241 YPG (#13) and 6.6 YPA (#11)
Conference games: 188 YPG (#3) and 5.6 YPA (#2)
The only area where we've gotten worse in conference play is 3rd down defense:
Non-con: 31% (#7)
Conference games: 37% (#4)
Also, Indiana ran all over us, in large part because our LBs were playing poorly at the start of the season. However, Tevin Coleman is a beast: 1,678 rushing yards at 7.84 yards per carry this season. That's second in the nation behind MGIII. He's the second best RB in the Big 10, not Ameer Abdullah.

I don't think there is any need to convince ourselves of anything. I don't see how that's even in questioned.
Aside from that though, no one brought up Mizzou until Arky fans did.
I was only wondering why the running game had such a great reputation when it simply isn't that good?

myth: we do nothing but run it 3 yards and a cloud of dust
reality: we are pretty balanced in running and passing the football
