It'll sound superficial, because it very much is. But A&M is boring. Good school, money, good people, good traditions, great state, but boring. I don't want to say "corporate" because it's not quite that, but it's very FUBU and insular and I think that probably doesn't help when trying to capitalize on all your other advantages to catapult the football program to a top 10-15 level.
I don't know how much of a real hurdle this is as a football program, but I don't think it helps. I think the fact that the brief time when they had J Football on campus was the most attention they garnered nationally over a span of decades probably proves that it has some impact.
You're not changing that A&M is wholesome, its logos, mascot, colors, etc. are all dull, College Station is bland as can be, etc. But I do think it's probably a good idea to hire someone who can inject some fun and life into the program should someone with those attributes land on the short list. Jimbo was the opposite of that. Good resume, solid all around, title winning coach - exactly how A&M drew it up. But he was utterly uninteresting. Even the mini controversies he got into on NIL, etc. were bland.

A&M, as a culture, lacks a hunger and fight. It reflects on the field. The kind of guy necessary to build such a culture would never be tolerated at College Station.
RC Slocum? Mike Sherman? Wonderful men, but not "that coach."

I regret that I have but one upvote to give this.
Those of us that were there know that we have not had a guy like Sherrill there since he left. Slocum is a good man, but lacked a killer instinct.
There will be plenty here that will point to the payoffs and say that defined him. They gloss that this was RAMPANT in the last days of the SWC, and pretty much the cost of doing business.
Jackie was Steve Spurrier, but with more of an edge. Spurrier was probably better with the game, but Jackie knew how to motivate. He may very well have gotten the serious hardware if he’d been allowed to stick around.

I’m starting to think it’s the city and campus. Walking around a campus that looks like Soviet Russia everyday will do a number on your mental health. I’m depressed just thinking about it.

Agreed. Walking around campus with the "don't drop the soap" mentality while almost every guy is wearing short shorts and cut-off midriff exposing shirts is creepy.

It’s a really bland campus…

Jackie knew how to cheat. I have a friend who was a walk on at State when Jackie was there. Everyone on the damn team was on steroids. Straight from the horse's mouth.

I'm all honesty, Jimbo was seen by many as a coup at the time.
A&m has issues for two reasons.
1. Arrogance. They built their program the way a drug dealer would try to build a legit business.
2. Weirdness. All of their peculiar shite has to make them less desirable for recruits.

Again, this was lingua franca in the SWC.
I’d be willing to bet it was fairly similar almost everywhere. The difference in the SWC was that the alums were too stupid to realize they were in a circular firing squad.

Imagine you were a recruit on a visit and you see a bunch of dudes in uniform holding their dongs and screaming. You ask why and they tell you “tradition”. Not to be mean or anything but I would leave as soon as possible.
