Arkansas and Ole Miss were like that in the early 60s. A brawl started in the stadium in Little Rock.

My Pops told me about this. He said it was so nasty that the game was not continued because of brawls in the stands. It’s not like that now obviously but definitely both fan bases don’t like each other virtually at least. Most Ark fans that come here are classy but I’ve heard it’s rough in Little Rock but that may be a Little Rock thing more than anything else as I’ve seen vids of Ark fans brawling each other more than anyone else there.

A unwritten rule was that no ref from Arkansas could call games in the SWC. Arkansas had zero pull in the SWC and weren't involved with the massive cheating in the 80s. Frank Broyles saw that it was headed for collapse and Arkansas would be left out. So the talk was that Broyles was in contact with the Big 8 but some schools blocked it from happening. So the SEC was the only option left. Frank had a huge influence in college football and pulled strings with Roy Kramer. Then Arkansas found a home in the SEC.

Yes. Imagine as an SEC fan playing every game against teams from Alabama, and every referee squad being made up solely of people from Alabama. That's the kind of frickery Arkansas dealt with in the SWC.

It was nasty in Jackson as I was told stories of Ole Miss fans making hand to palm gestures as Arkansas fans were walking to the game. A lot of fist fights between both fans.

That is one of the many reasons Frank tried to get Arkansas to leave as early as the 70s. It was a bout politics and Arkansas was getting screwed at everything. Remember the phantom pass interference in the early 80s SMU game? The one call that even Keith Jackson said was a terrible call? The university raised hell and that ref was fired. Had Arkansas not done anything then he would have gotten away with it. Texas will take care of other Texas teams while Arkansas had no say in what went on.

The move to the SEC gave Arkansas breathing room as other SEC powers weren't located in one state. Arkansas is and is still seen as an outsider but at least they could have a voice unlike the Texas conference where shenanigans were done.

So Arkansas was trying to escape the political back room stuff that Texas is often accused of to this day?

Somehow Oklahoma it seems knows how to play the game with Texas as does Bama no doubt. That’s your power block in the SEC going forward…those three teams Texas, Bama and Oklahoma. They will have a gentlemen’s agreement and deal with mofos.

The rest of us just have to hope for lighting in a bottle.

Oklahoma was a maverick program like Miami and both were put on major probation in the 90s. That was back when the NCAA actually enforced the rules. Oklahoma State did as well as a recruit back in the 60s said that he was going to Arkansas despite Oklahoma State giving him free cars. Jimmy Johnson was the coach at Oklahoma State and Miami. Both were put on probation. Frank hired Hatfield instead and Arkansas fans were angry as were Jimmy. But Frank was smart as he feared that his outlaw ways would put Arkansas on probation. It was the same with Switzer.

Frank was prideful but he had the best intentions for Arkansas as he built the program that had zero history to a power in the 60s. He felt that if Arkansas was put on probation for recruiting violations then his legacy would be tarnished forever and so he played it safe.

That doesn't mean that Arkansas didn't cheat it was that they weren't going to be cut throats to achieve success and instead hire solid coaches that wouldn't put the school and state in a negative light. Arkansas besides Rice were the only SWC schools that weren't on probation but yet the SWC blamed Arkansas for the collapse.

As a Texas guy who is comfortable in his own shoes, let me be frank. Arkansas is the #1 rival Texas has. Not OU, not A&M.

OU is a great rival, and they are indeed our current nemesis. But the level of real hate is lacking.. Losing to Arkansas, as a Longhorn, is absolutely gut wrenching. And the same is true for Razorbacks. It just IS.

I wish no ill will to Oklahoma.

I want the entire state of Arkansas to die in a trailer fire.

Its how I was raised…

A&M should be the #1 rival of Texas in the mind of any rational person but A&M is not.

Why?

Because through no fault of A&M or Texas, the games never actually meant very much… That is NOT a statement attempting to throw shade at ANYONE. Through a sheer fluke of chance, there has never been a period in football where Texas and A&M were both competing at a very high level at the same time. Bragging rights are one thing, but to have a game, or a series of games, where there are NATIONAL implications… That is the key ingredient. And the lacking ingredient.

Texas and OU drops off after football
Arkansas doesn’t.
This has a lot to do with the fact that OU and Texas weren’t in the same conference

The level of hate from Arkansas is in every sport
They want to beat Texas in something. Actually one of the main reasons why they got so good in basketball
You see it with Eric Mussleman this week.

Damn brah!

It is odd that Texas has Jerry World, and the largest Alumni group outside of Ar is in DFW area, and others throughout Texas. I don't hate Texans... I have worked with many whom I have helped, and they helped me as well. Good honest hard working folks.

But in Football, Yep... Let's Get It On! Basketball hasn't worried me, in the next couple of years with Beard, that may change.

Baseball... Not too worried, good rivalry. But Football... We love the David vs Goliath match..

And With all the Texas students that Arkansas has enrolled over the last decade or so, their alumni money base will do nothing but grow. Students from DFW can get to Fayetteville in 5 hours.

From what I can tell, if a Texas kid (especially in East Texas) can't get into Texas or doesn't want or go to A&M, they go to Arkansas now.

Why Arkansas doesn't recruit this area harder, is just perplexing to me. All of east Texas is a hotbed for talent. Only one coach, Chad, understood that since Petrino. Too bad he had a legit case for being the worst coach in SEC history, becuase he had the recruiting figured out.

After one summer of Texas posters and I consider Arky's history with them. I have dealt with them one summer and I hate them, these guy share a border and once shared a conference with those arse hats. It is no wonder to me.
