Yeah, the Manieri look is the best. Butch does it.
Unless you're a paragon of manliness like Cann.
This guy? Seems like he's emulating his mentor as well with the pullover. Wore it all last weekend. He did wear a jersey, though, last season when he was an assistant at LSU

I hope maineiri keeps wearing that same old pullover. It's the only thing left of him that's seen a national championship in Omaha.

Bill Russell simultaneously played and coached the Boston Celtics to a couple of NBA titles in the late '60s. Tom Landry played defensive back for the NY Giants in the 1950s while also serving as their defensive coordinator.

Same reason all those clowns wear houndstooth in Tuscaloosa. Started back in the day and now it's tradition. I got no problem with it.

I had to wear baseball pants for a team I coached this Spring. Before that, the last time I was in a baseball pant was 1988.
Main problem I had...lack of front pockets.

Hats off to you , Coach
My main problems would be my table-muscle and the inability to get a lip full of Copenhagen in the dugout

Fans of SEC teams don't really have a leg to stand on when it comes to ripping traditions...

The link that lsufball19 shared stated that the first Managers were just business managers and had nothing to do with on-the-field issues. The uniformed guys in charge of the dugout were called Captains.
Over time the term Captain faded away
But your photo is interesting. Mack was a traditional Manager like we see today, wasn't he?
Mack wasn't just the manager--he owned the club. But, to answer your question, at least in the early part of his career, he functioned as a traditional manager (except that he didn't go on the field to argue since he wasn't in uniform).
Last major league manager to do it, as best I remember, was Burt Shotton, who managed the Brooklyn Dodgers for a couple of years (including Jackie Robinson's debut season, as chronicled in the movie 42.)

But they don't need to wear a uniform to do that. And when they make pitching changes and go out to the mound, play is stopped and they call time. It's not really different from football or basketball.
He's right though. Connie Mack wasn't allowed to visit the mound as manager, because he was out of uniform (see: LINK).
