No one is ever going to do anything at Vandy unless they take football more seriously. Until that changes, it will always be a graveyard for coaches.

The previous coach before Mason got the Penn State job off his work at Vandy. It can be done but Mason was never the right fit.

It is by far the worst job in the SEC.
An up and coming coach if have a winning season should leave asap.

To be fair that’s pretty normal for Vandy

That's also the reason they started putting coeds on the team.

James Franklin only stayed three seasons and those were the best years you will see at Vandy. He didn't stay long enough to be fired and left knowing he would have if he didn't go to Penn State.

now, surpringly he should be fired by PSU

Winning the Big 10 title was the best he was going to do at PSU. He is just trying to survive since.

After what Vandy looked like around 2012 I thought he might be legit.

For a really good coach, Vanderbilt should be a very good job. Win 5 or 6 games a year and be reasonably competitive and a coach can stick around with none of the pressures at the big programs. Look at Cutcliffe at Duke. He makes, relatively speaking, good but not great money. But all Duke expects him to do is to be reasonably competitive (I am and old Duke alum and suffered through really miserable football in my day). Vanderbilt should be a better program and is similar to Duke. Its academics will draw a certain kind of player, likely to graduate and improve and develop each year. They are not going to be a big time program, but clearly a good coach can do much better than Mason did.
Vandy is tougher though because of the competition. Duke has in their conference Wake Forest, Syracuse and BC. They're smaller schools that are similar to Duke as far as the academic-athletic balance. Vandy is alone in the SEC as that type of school and their results and recruiting reflect that.
I agree with almost entirely but I think it's a much tougher hill to climb at Vandy even though like you said, the expectations are low. Even meeting those low expectations is really tough because of the scheduling.

He never got them competitive. 7 years is enough time to see if a guy is a fit for your program. I mean Vandy is never going to win the SEC but the right coach can get them bowl eligible more times than not. Mason wasn’t it.

Bingo. Just like Napier deciding Miss St would be a career killer, so would Vandy most likely for Freeze. At least places like Tennessee, Kentucky, and South Carolina can have a chance at making waves in the conference.

Because of the lack of fan support and desire to get better, you really need to be above average in coaching to have even modest success at Vandy. Mason was not one of those kinds.

Miss St. is a better job than Vandy. They have proven with the Dan Mullen years that they can improve the program. At least they put in the effort to get better unlike Vandy.

It's his fault Vandy has the shittiest Power 5 football team outside of Kansas, though.
So that is probably why he got fired.
Franklin won nine games in back to back seasons at Vandy so it’s not an impossible place to win. Mason also had the benefit of going up against Muschamp, Butch and Cornbread, Barry Odom, Kentucky, and an Ole Miss program under heavy sanctions during his years there. A truly good HC should have been able to put together 7-6, 8-5 type seasons consistently like Stoops has done at Kentucky. Mason didn’t come close to doing that.
