Why Butch has done wonders at Tennessee win or lose in 2016

When Butch got to Tennessee they were at the same level of dumpster fire that Alabama was when Mike Shula showed up. They had no players, they were radioactive, they were a place that no coach wanted to go.

Fast forward to today and they have built great facilities and have a roster filled with guys who will be taken on the first days of the 2017 and 2018 drafts. He healed their fractured football player alumni base. He stabilized things.

If Butch falls on his face next year, goes 7-5 and Tennessee decides it is time to move on, how much better a job is that than when Butch showed up in 2013? Personally, I think Butch is a pretty average coach who recruits well and gets his guys to play really hard. But again, if everything bombs this year and he gets fired, isn't Tennessee in a much better position than they were 3 years ago?

Discuss.

I don't really understand the Butch hate. it's pretty obvious that he's on schedue rebuilding the program. plus, a guy like Shoop doesn't leave Penn State for a wildcard coach. he's obviously well respected in the coaching circles.

I don't think Butch is a good in game coach and he is super corny. That said, he recruits well and his team's are always prepared well.

Whether he succeeds at UT or not, he should be commended for the job he's done. The guy is a hard worker and is very passionate.

Now let the shite slinging commence.

He is a better recruiting version of Mike Shula for us. He stabilized things and took the brunt of the crap while the shite smell of total embarrassment wore off.

I like what he's done. Very much revamped the TSIO and has made UT a contender in the east. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Code for "finally, someone agrees with us".

Doolander was all the things you're saying Butch was. He came in and recovered the program from the turmoil it was going through. Yeah, he didn't amount to shite, but that was supposed to be the foundation that Butch was then supposed to be a legit hire on.

ETA: In short, you're moving the goal posts.

He's had a good track record of improving year after year at his past stops (and I knew him at CMU), so in that sense, I think UT will be fine in that shape.

This honestly is pretty damn critical. I remember the quotes about Dooley and they seemed quite damning. For Butch to fix that up is very important.

I'd like to see if UT/UF goes back to it's 90s form where both squads are really good when they meet up.

Not even close. Dooley's roster management led to the disaster Butch had year 1 (no QB, no linemen, no defensive players). Butch's roster management led to the team they have now with NFL players all over the field.

Again, he set the program up to be attractive again, even if he keeps being average.

Dooley left the program in a worse state than when he inherited it.

You're wrong and obviously know nothing about Dooley's tenure here. He took the shite storm that Kiffin started and turned it into overdrive. Butch inherited NOTHING. Roster was awful

This is way, way off the mark.

How in the world did he improve or stabilize the program in anyway? He recruited every position except WR extremely poorly and the program was so unstable after year 2 that he lost 7 coaches off his staff. Many, many fans wanted him fired after losing to UK to end year 2 and all the divisiveness led to an absolute clusterfrick of a 2012.

Not only did he massively underachieve with an extremely veteran and talented offense that year, but he also did a terrible job recruiting.

Butch inherited close to no young talent as a result.

No matter what you think of Butch as a gameday coach, the talent level now is the best it has been since 2004, at the very least and this year's freshman and sophomore classes are absolutely loaded.
