Whose decision to punt was better? Silverfield’s or Kiffin’s?

LSU was up 27-24 with 1:37 left in the 4th quarter. 4th and 1 on their own 43. Kentucky was out of timeouts. Kiffin decided to punt.

Arkansas was down 24-17 with 1:36 in the 4th quarter. 4th and 10 on their own 25. Arkansas had 3 timeouts. Silverfield decided to punt.

Both were good decisions. You can't risk giving field position like that when only leading by a FG.

Arkansas’ last series was horribly run.
You have two minutes, three time-outs, Tennessee is inviting you to run the ball. On first or second down, run a draw play or some type of run play. Instead, they had three incomplete passes. And then on fourth down, you gotta go for it. Simple as that.

Kiffin’s pendulum seems to have swung overly aggressive to passively conservative. Old Kiffin says “d*mn the torpedos, full speed ahead.” New Kiffin says kick the FG or punt on 4th and 1.

Given the two outcomes, hindsight is always 20-20. Arkansas’ was more egregious but LSU’s was not much better.

Kiffins decision was a good one. Kentucky was out of timeouts I believe, I went to bed believing lsu won after he decided to punt seriously

Silverfields.

With 3 timeouts and over a 1:30 left, facing fourth and ten from his own what was it, ten yard line?

Punting has better odds of success. Only an uninformed casual would think he should have gone for it.

Agreed with only discussion being do we get the ball back with any time left

I get everyone wants the gunslinger mentality, and with Stein winning 2 OT games with a 2 point conversion, everyone assumes those are the right calls.

LSU was on their side of the 50, with a full yard to go. Kentucky had struggled moving the ball and their kicker was struggling too, so pining them back makes the most senst to me instead of possibly giving them a short field.

I'm glad Stein went for two both times, and we won both games, but could easily have lost both games. But in his first year, likely being less talented than both teams he was playing, he made the right call to try to win the game and fortunately it has worked both times.

I don't fault Kiffin for that decision.

I understood the logic in what Silverfield was doing but in that situation you have to say frick it and go for it. When you are as bad as Arkansas has been, you have to be aggressive and it might pay off. Look at Kentucky

Silverfield has no guts, Kiffin no brains... Silver was playing with house money, Kiffin spending it like a Minnesota day care operating in Learing.

We have the benefit of hindsight now, but it was absolutely the right call at the time IMO, even though I fully expected Kiffin to go for it.

KIffin made the right choice. I was watching telling my friend "Lane is about to do some dumb shite". Then burned the Time out and punted.

Yeah, thats the crux of it. 3 timeouts, only 15 or 20 seconds should get run off the clock. So, yeah, theyd still have over a minute left. Of course, they have to get that 3 and out.

But its still statistically more likely than converting a 4th an 10 from your own 10. Arkie fans need to lay off their coach. He made the right call.

I think Kiffin actually made the correct call. Kentuckys offense had already missed 2 field goals and struggled finishing drives and converting on third down. Kentuckys defensive line was doing a good job producing TFL's... The prevent defense LSU went with on the other hand.. I'll have to rewatch it but that looked like don't let them get behind you defense.

Just made it obvious Silverfield can’t coach at this level. Zero balls

Absolutely wrong and absurd statement.
The stats show the total opposite.
Punting produced 7% historically
To about 17% going for it.

Both are low odds, but in AR, Punting produced an absolute zero chance of winning. That historical 7% is practically Zero.

Silverfield's decision to Punt was not a calculation of trying to win, he was trying to lose by less.
A failed 4th try leads to Tenn kneeling or scoring.

You guys trying to say Punting here was the better choice to win are just being stupid by trying to look smart by going against what everyone else is saying.

This Punt literally ended a career for Silverfield and killed any chance of a win against Vandy.
AR players will start opting out of games before the season ends.
Some will have 'injuries,' some will just walk out.
What little Silverfield had of The locker room was lost Sat.

Kiffin’s punt may have been the correct decision, but LSU didn't hire Lane for safe decisions when the game is on the line

Arkansas' decision to punt made the most sense. Even if Arkansas gets a 3 and out after not picking up the 4th down conversion, the opponent is in FG range. Hold them to a FG and you're down 2 scores with less than 2 minutes left. Ball game is all but over.

Kentucky's kicker was 1 for 3 and that isn't FG range. Kentucky still has to move the ball a little bit to have a chance to tie it.

Good decision.

Probably fricked no matter what. If you punt it and use all 3 time outs and get a stop, you might can get a chance to tie and win.

If you go for it and don't get it, you've lost because even if you use all 3 time outs and get a stop, they are going to get the easy FG and make it a 2 score game.

It's that whole 10 yards things that gets me.

However, you do still have the ball and timeouts and even if you get the 3 stops and the ball back you're looking at a miracle play to tie the game.

I'm not sure really is a right or wrong situation. But I think I'd rather have the ball.
