Wuerffel was your run of the mill spread system QB back before anyone knew what that was, similar to Andre Ware. He operated an offense designed to give QBs huge numbers without any special skillset. A decade later Mike Leach was putting out a different QB like him every single year. Does anyone consider Garaham Harrell an all-time great because he threw for a billion yards?

Wait-- you called out system QBs and listed Manziel as an alltimer?

Not magical enough like the other 2

He won 9 games in 2013 with what I'm pretty sure was the worst statistical defense in SEC history. That was a 5 win team without him. He had arguably the greatest individual offensive performance in college history, given the quality of the defense he was facing. 550 total yards and 6 TDs against Bama. He had more yards himself than any other TEAM has gained on Bama since Saban's arrival.

If he had a competent defense the story would be very different. Guys like Young and Cam had good and average defenses, respectively.

Wuerffel - best QB. Not the best physical gifts but uncanny ability to find receivers, know outlets, put the ball in the right spot, pre-snap reads. LSU, Auburn, FSU, Vols, and a few others put some excellent defenses together when Wuerffel was in school and he shredded all of them more than once.

Tebow - force of will, he could move mountains.

Sam Bradford - best drop back passer ever. Remarkably accurate, made all the throws. Not so much the leader but extremely gifted in passing.

Newton - step below Bradford in throwing, stronger arm than Tebow but not always as accurate. Not as tough as Tebow but physically gifted and difficult to stop and could still take over a game. Auburn wins 2010 title with Tebow but I don't think UF wins 2008 title with Newton. Tebow was a difference maker. Newton could not have powered through that 2008 Bama defense in the 4th quarter like Tebow.

Nah

Tebow's titles were built largely around dynamic backs, Percy Harvin being impossible to defend and good defenses. He was a great leader, but he wasn't the dynamic playmaker Cam was. Defenses couldn't key on him because he could hand the ball to any number of future NFL players who ran 4.3-4.4 40s from all directions.

Auburn said "we're gonna run Cam between the tackles 15-20 times and he's gonna get 200 yards doing it". Then he did it. Over and over again.

Look at that long TD run he had against LSU and ask yourself if Tebow could do that? Hell no, he didn't have that gear.

Both were very talented college quarterbacks.

But Johnny was fricking magical.

"Magical" gets you a NC. He's warming the bench for the second year with a team that's never been good enough to win a Super Bowl.

Cam Newton brought Auburn back from 24 down AT Bama. He ran for 217 yards against LSU.

Jamarcus Russell

As far as college QB's go, Russell will always be the guy that I dreaded Alabama playing more than anyone. Bama could have and should have beat Cam; did beat JFF, Tebow, and a lot of other good QB's but Russell was clutch against Bama and beat us twice in a row. Anytime he rolled out of the pocket I just covered my eyes.
