Here is the thing about A&M. They are the opposite of the rest of the "middle of the pack" teams. Most of those schools are looking to hit on all cylinders so they can catch lightning in a bottle and win. For A&M they just need to quit tripping over themselves to do so because if A&M ever finds a way to win an SEC Title they will be a force that is very, very hard to knock back down. If A&M can win the money that will flow into the program will be mind boggling and they will dominate recruiting in Texas just as they did in the late '80s and early '90s, only this time they are built to sustain it.

It truly is the sleeping giant that is trying ever so hard to wake up.

BTW, I think Florida is a lock to get back to the top and stay there. FSU and Miami are living on borrowed time right now. Both are hurting for money and the ACC TV deal sucks, especially compared to what is about to happen with the SEC Network. With Florida in complete control of that state it can't help but be elite.

FSU always recruits well. They will continue to do so. They have some very good recruiters and there is too much talent in the state for two teams to not prosper. Plus, they play in the weak arse ACC. They can sell ACC championships and good bowls to their recruits. Also, they still send a good number of guys to the NFL. Not every kid is enamored with playing in the best conference. They just want NFL money no matter how it happens.

FSU doesn't need money. The state pays them.

Miami = toast

The S. FL kids will still go there but they won't be able to recruit the rest of the state or nationally like they used to. S. FL kids alone won't be enough for various reason which I won't go into here.

The only way to level the playing field is to put a cap on NCAA spending. It would make the league much more competitive and redirect the focus to education where it is supposed to be anyway. Until this happens the competition will continue to spiral toward a select few programs.

They did this with scholarship limits. Never say never.

No question in my mind that both UF and UT will be back. UGA, as mentioned, needs to get over the hump.

especially Ole Miss. Right now it's just hard to recruit there against the other powers.

Coach Ed Orgeron brought in 3 top 15 recruiting classes to oxford without winning anything and most all of those players are in the NFL. Freeze was one of his assistants back in the day and learned how to recruit from him. Its not impossible to get talent to oxford. Our recruiting class coming off a 2-10 season last year is proof. You just have to recruit your arse off.

Seal appears to have been a generous man and a great supporter but not in the T Boone/Phil Knight league. He gave $12 million (or rather his family did since he passed) for your $25 million project (not $80 million) according to your AD site.

LINK

For perspective Pickens has given over $400 million to Oklahoma State and over $265 million to athletics according to latest estimates on his Wiki. OSU is basically T Boone's franchise team, he is so pervasive there I went to the Alamo Bowl where they won a couple years ago with a client and the first person Gundy thanked was T Boone. Even with all of that though OSU will never surpass OU, much less Texas, for the long run.

As a sidenote T Boone actually started school at A&M as a basketball player but was cut from the team and had to transfer. Damn that was an expensive mistake!

In two years, all of our football facilities will be up to par with the SEC. We won't be tops, but I don't see how you can point to any of our facilities and say, "well that's just not up to SEC standards.

As for my answer, A&M has no excuse if they aren't elite in the coming years.

Not reading this whole damn thread, but for all those saying UT, I don't think so. They have a rich tradition, but the truth is that UT has to recruit well out of the Carolinas in order to have the talent level. There just isn't that many quality recruits in Tennessee. That won't happen as long as USCe and Clempson are good.

Arky had a couple of good years, but it was all a mirage. Even with Petrino, they weren't going to be a real threat to win the SEC this year. Their recruiting has suffered. And like UT, they don't produce a wealth of talent in Arky.

The top three candidates to emerge as threats to the Bama-LSU dominance are easily Florida, aTm and UGA. All have talent rich recruiting bases, top-flight facilities and plenty of money. I have doubts that Richt can ever get UGA there, however. The juries are still out on Muschamp and Sumlin, but both appear to be headed in the right direction.

Nutt bent dat knee on LSU in 2008 in baton rouge

While true, I am surprised you were ballsy enough to bring this up. The lasting memory you and everyone in your bottom tier program should remember is LSU giving Nutt and your sorry asses a mercy kneel with five minutes remaining.

We were merciful with a third of the fourth quarter remaining.

At first I wanted more points, but after watching it occur it was definitely the most entertaining end to a game against you punks.

As for the OP: UF and A&M

Can't say that I agree with this. The Vols had a good run, but they did it when the Gators were down. When Florida is on their game and have a half way decent coach, they're damn near impossible to out-recruit. As we all know, you got to have the horses to run the race.

Trust me when I tell you that what you can read is not the "whole story" on Leo Seal.

He had a trust in his will that has never been publicized for the specific purpose of "keeping a coach worth a damn or getting rid of one that isn't". Rumored to be worth between $50-100mil. That is why our AD has repeatedly said that we would never lose Mullen over money.

The Mize family also have about $50 mil tied up in MSU in different avenues and are constantly giving more. Rumor has it he was going to write a check at one point when we were initially going to horseshoe the stadium in 2001 before the wheels fell off our program(granted it would have been a much less impressive horseshoe probably to the tune of $10-20mil).

They are still not T.Boone, but State has a few big fish. In private athletics donations over the past two years, we are on par with the entire SEC as is Ole Miss. Our stadiums/population base are the only things holding back our overall profitability compared to others. There is enough money flowing into each athletics dept to compete now. Hasn't always been, but there is now.

Jackie Sherrill has already proven that you can recruit at an elite level at MSU. It's a shame that cruit rankings don't go back far enough to really show it. Look at our 2002 and 2003 classes after the tires had already fallen off for reference. Granted, Mullen is not yet recruiting on that level...

If LSU fans are going to make fun of us for texas kneeing the ball to end the game you bet your arse I'm going to bring up when we did it to y'all in 08.

I completely agree with what Engie says in his post. The money is there enough for us to be competitive for a long time. The trouble for us traditionally has been pairing the resources off the field with the product on the field. Mullen has brought us into a level of respectability and competitivity that actually merits spending money on stadium renovation, facilities, etc.

I am not saying that we can have prolonged levels of BAMA or LSU type football, but I believe that we will start seeing us string together consistent 8-9 win seasons with the occassional huge season.
