well, on the flip side, Bianco went to Ole Miss, a rival of his alma mater and previous coaching job. I tend to believe that rarely has much effect on where guys take jobs. Plenty of D-1 head coaches in all sports coach at schools that are rivals of their alma maters or previous coaching jobs. IMO, McDonnell would and should jump at the opportunity to coach at a program like State.

You're right, coaches take jobs at schools that put them at odds with their previous allegiances all of the time. I don't think this would be a matter of being an instate rival with Ole Miss the institution, as much as it would be a reluctance to take a job that would put him at odds with Bianco the friend.

Let's face it, one of the job requirements at State is to take shots at Ole Miss, whether on the recruiting trail, at fundraisers, or otherwise. Lest we forget this gem that occurred under Cohen's watch.

I don't know how close McDonnell and Bianco actually are, but Bianco did send his kid up to Louisville to play for McDonnell. That tells me that they have a tremendous amount of respect for, and trust in, one another.

McDonnell seems like a stand-up guy, so I'm sure he would handle it well. Hell, Bianco might even encourage him to take the job. Regardless, I think that the relationship between coaches as it relates to the dynamic between schools would be a factor to consider.

Well CNB, there's disk golf. ;-)

I was really glad for the move back to UF as I think he will do well there; of course I was also excited about him going to take over at MSU for a badly need boost to the program.

Funny when Mullen and Tebow left UF in the same year; the Urb started having heart problems!

Mullen has contributed a lot to both universities. If he gets the right QB and OL at UF, the Gators will contend for the East in short order.

It's ok to root for two universities in different conferences, just ask RebelGator.

Ps. I am also a big fan of BOOM! Great Luck to USC this year.

What does that matter? Moo didn't steal him away. They hired a guy who was jobless.

You Sir are a dumbass. His leaving UF was followed right up by Urban's sudden heart issues.

His quote was about Howland.

If State wanted Butch, they'd have Butch. He'd crawl on hot coals back to Starkville. If State ends up with him, it would be because options A-E fell through. It wouldn't be a terrible consolation prize, but State is definitely aiming higher.

Howland could have had a bigger job coming off a year of unemployment.

If he could have had one he would have gotten it. Same as when Jackie got fired at A&M and Moo hired him two years later. He took what he could get b/c his name was damaged.

Part of the reason Howland was fired from UCLA was b/c he had a rash of transfers and AAU coaches were actively telling their players to not play for him at UCLA due to the way he pulled a scholarship at the last minute from a kid he didn't want other Pac12 schools to recruit. The dude had baggage that led him to Moo.

While I agree that Howland wasn't hugely in demand, your take about how he left UCLA is one of the dumbest things ever written on this board, which is quite an accomplishment.

As for Jackie, he had options. He took his best one. And you are one of the few A&M folks I know that would utter a bad word about him.

Yeah, UAB started their program same year Sherrill started at State. I imagine there was a phone call but UAB couldn't risk that taint with zero history to fall back on.

McDonnell is not coming. He and Bianco are tighter than tight and I could see a scenario where Bianco might give McDonnell his blessing to take the Mississippi State job if offered but I don’t see McDonnell taking it.

I also don’t see State offering him the job considering how closely he is aligned with the Ole Miss program.

Perhaps. After all it's a good negotiation tool to get more money from their present gigs.

I'm hearing from my source in the athletic dept that if we make a super regional this year, the job will be Gary Hendersons if he wants it

Saying he was damaged goods when Moo hired him isn't saying something bad about him. It's straight fact. It's the entire reason he was even available.
