From a results perspective, Dana X Bible, RC Slocum and Jackie Sherrill ahead of Bryant

Actually, what Dye did is probably more impressive considering he took over a program that had practically zero talent, terrible shitty facilities, an athletic program hemmoraging money and was facing Bear Bryant, Vince Dooley, Johnny Majors, and Charlie Pell and his spending spree for recruits.

AU had not won an SEC championship since 1957, had only won more than 6 games one time in half a dozen years and had not been to a bowl game since Shug Jordan retired.

I do not think Saban could have done as well as Pat Dye did. Saban walked into a GREAT situation at Bama and he walked into a team stocked with talent at LSU as well.

Saban has lost 10 SEC games at Bama in 6 years. Through his first 9 years (pre-Ramsey), Dye lost 15 at AU, 6 of which were in his first two years and considering the dumpster fire he took over, I do not think any coach in the history of college football could have done better.

We will see if Saban ever equals Dye's 3 straight SEC championships, but I honestly do not believe Saban or anyone else could have done a better job than Dye did at AU from 1981-1989.

You're wrong TT. You may not fully understand the impact Dye had and what he took over though.

You should also realize that by 1990, people were asking if Dye would be greater than Bear when he was done.

Then the Ramsey thing hit.

I'll stand by it, I do not believe Nick Saban could have done as well as Dye. Period.

Also, if 1981 Dye had taken over 2007 Bama you would probably be looking at the same results.

Missouri is debatable, Don Faurot was the inventor of the first option attack with his Wing T formation. His influence on football is still felt throughout the game.

I don't mean best tenure at your school. For instance, Spurrier could've never coached a game at South Carolina but he'd still be the best coach to ever coach there (IMO)

Based upon what? Dietzel won a MNC at LSU and Holtz won one at Notre Same.

Holtz was the best sprinter in college football. I'm convinced that in terms of turning programs around and motivating fans and players, Holtz may be the best of all time challenged only by Snyder at K. State.

Holtz's first year at SC, when he went 0-11, was one of the greatest coaching jobs I have ever seen in one season.

But Jim Carlen was a great coach. He would have been here for 25 years and done great things were it not for the politics of the school at the time.

Joe Morrison too - had it not been for Sports Illustrated and Tommy Chaiken.

Neither had the benefit of the SEC yet both were outstanding coaches and recruiters.

What will eventually move Spurrier to #1 IMHO is his acquired fondness for our state, fans and program and, because he allowed himself to fall in love with all of it, it is now starting to show on the field. In other words it is not all about business to him any longer. Nor is it about showing UF and Foley that he is still a great coach. Nor isit just about beating Georgia every year. These days it is far more about elevating South Carolina and solidifying his legacy. His motivations changed from one centered around himself and his egocentricities to one centered around his family and his surroundings. Whenhe first arrived at Florida it was about his alma mater ... but his ego got in the way as time passed IMHO. Just the reverse has happened here at SC and that has become a positive for us, our program and for Coach Spurrier. Whereas those other coaches I mentioned - Dietzel, Carlen, Morrison and Enright ... they all loved this place from the get go. Holtz eventually did as well and it shows. He used to tell me that this was his first real job ... and his last.

Get that Saban garbage out of here. Les Miles. If Saban wanted to come back today, I'd hope we told him like those Texas topsiders told Johnny Football:

Get the frick out!

I'm sure I am in the minority (and biased), but I think Pat Dye is one of the greatest college coaches ever along with Bowden, Bear, Spurrier, Saban. Had the Ramsey stuff not happened, Dye would have been at AU another decade and the 90's would have been a lot different in the SEC. What Dye did at AU is as impressive at what Saban has done at Bama IMO. And Dye was even more a hardass than Saban and took an AU program that was really pitiful to the top of the SEC for many years

This its probably true. But, not because LSU people don't think he's the best. They know he's the best. They just mad at him.
