Nowhere close. Going into his disastrous last season he was exactly .500 (22-22-1) at USCe with a bowl win.

Heck, his final record was only 3 games worse than Sparky Woods' and Sparky never went to a bowl game.

Never heard of Earl Brown before. I added him to the list as #2.

I'm not really counting him since he was an interim coach who was never hired on a permanent basis.

Either Dooley or Bert since I've been watching SEC ball. When I was at Ole Miss the Nutt hate was pretty high though, he could at least coach but might be the worst with the fanbase.

Anybody who doesn't think Whitworth was the worst SEC coach ever has never heard of him.

No.2 on is pretty debatable. At least #3 on is, since the guy at Auburn seems pretty bad.

But #1 is hardly up for debate.

In my lifetime it’s Curley Hallman. He took a solid LSU team only a couple years removed from an SEC championship and ran it into the ground.

Ears is the worst of all time. What he managed to accomplish at Alabama is breath taking actually.

Consider this: John L. Smith lost his brother and went through a major bankruptcy in 2012 and he still managed to equal "Ears" Whitworth's three year win total.

Whitworth transcended football... he also posted a 1 win and 10 loss season as baseball coach at Georgia. The man was almost super human in his ability to lose.

Do we need more reason to heap scorn and abuse on the man? Yes? Well some folks say he instigated an attack on a black football player during a game while he was head coach at Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State).

Whitworth stands head and shoulders above the worst of the worst.

Oddly enough, he was born in Arkansas and coached at Alabama. The man who replaced him was also born in Arkansas and coached at Alabama. But Bear Bryant is remembered a bit more fondly for his ability to win games.

For Arkansas... we've had our share of one or two season wonders who were horrible... but Bielema holds the statistical record as the worst coach to last 5 years at Arkansas. And, for our sins, he came immediately after John L. Smith's mental breakdown.

Croom had one decent season but also left one of the worst rosters in sec history behind him when he was finally fired. He was a lot worse than his terrible record would suggest.

He is a solid #2. Was shut out eleven times also in his three years. Was 1-2-1 against non 1-A teams. Lost to Wofford!

It wasn't solid when Hallman got there. He inherited an empty cupboard. Mike Archer won in '87 and '88 with Bill Arnsparger's players, but by '89 there wasn't enough left to have a winning season. He has never been a HC since.

Despite his early success, Mike Archer definitely was one of the worst in SEC history. He began a 6 year losing streak at a program where that should never happen. The AD Joe Dean is also to blame.

Mike Archer couldn't recruit a Homeless Person!!!

Bret Bielema needs to be on that list. 11-29 in SEC games.

Those are GOAT numbers compared to Ears Whitworth. In 3 seasons he was 3-18-1 in the SEC and 4-24-2 overall at Alabama.

For comparison:

In the 3 years before Whitworth, Harold Drew went 20-10-5 (11-5-4 in the SEC) with an SEC title, Orange bowl win, and Cotton Bowl loss.

In the 3 years after Whitworth, Paul Bryant went 20-7-5 with a Liberty bowl loss and a Bluebonnet bowl tie. He then won the national title in 1961.

No coach in the history of this conference has managed to do so little with so much than Jennings B "Ears" Whitworth

And his quarterback was Bart Starr. Won the first 2 Super Bowls, 2 time Super Bowl MVP, multiple Pro Bowls, NFL Most Valuable Player, Pro Football Hall of Fame.

After checking my facts, I guess Starr played only 1 year for Whitworth.

During Sparky's tenure he had 2 teams invited to the Independence Bowl. Our AD at the time had no vision and rejected the bowl invitations because they could interrupt exams. They were never committed to winning football games at USC until Lou Holtz came in. Sadly those teams could've used the extra practices etc. It made me hate King Dixon for sure

Can’t believe State’s own Rocky Felker hasn’t been mentioned. From 1986-1990, he had an overall record of 21-34 which isn’t terrible, but his SEC record was 5-28. He also led the “Tech and 10” season of 1988. His tenure was comparable to Croom.

Curley is the worst coach in LSU history. Rice and Colorado State pounded LSU during those years.

cannot believe Doug Barfield (the barn) hasn't been mentioned - his last year the barn went 0-for in the SEC.

Barfield’s SEC record was actually 13-10-1 going into that last year where he finished 0-6.
