There was a famous sports writer in Austin named Robert Heard... He actually wrote a book called "When Football Becomes War"... about Oklahoma vs. Texas.
Dude was not only famous as a writer... but he also pulled out some injured people out of the line of fire in the 1966 tower shooting at Texas. So he was known as a hero in Texas for that.
Anyway, he wrote an article right after Barry Switzer was forced to resign and said exactly that. That now that Switzer was gone... "OU would never beat Texas again." And during the first part of the Gary Gibbs area at OU... It looked like he was going to be correct.

My dad grew up in Duncan, OK. Your coach has y’all headed in the right direction. As much as y’all love football, with your pride and long tradition I think y’all will keep enough millionaires and billionaires donating to be fine…

Historical accomplishments and accessibility over the years to top recruits clearly points toward Oklahoma. But how much of that is relevant today when anyone can pay anyone?
Texas A&M is a flagship institute with a large alumnus and unlimited funds. They are undefeated and their trajectory is strong toward the playoff. As of right now in this moment, Texas A&M is in great shape. Oklahoma is one loss away from essentially being eliminated from the CFP. TAMU could lose two of their remaining schedule and still be comfortably in because their resume is impressive.
It’s one year at a time. As of now, there’s a lot of doubt surrounding OU and into the future. Texas A&M has a great coach who is winning. The trajectory sure looks nice.

Oklahoma built a history on taking Texas kids that were so stupid they couldn’t be accepted into a Texas university.

Uhhhh…. Why do people keep saying this. lol.
OU has one of the best defenses in the country, a solid 2026 class coming in and currently the top early 2027 class. With exposure in prime recruiting territory and the 5th most watched team in the country. There isn’t a single metric that points to OU falling off a cliff like Nebraska did.
It's what others (especially texas fans) hope will be the case haha wishful thinking. We were down pretty bad last year but bounced back this year to be in the mix late in the season. This is only our second season in this league. I expect things to get even better next season when the schedule is not nearly as tough as it has been the first two years. But with our luck, Florida, Miss St, and Kentucky will all be good next year

I don't know if most SEC fans know this... because he ended up in Mississippi and went to school at Alabama.
But Jackie Sherrill lived in Duncan, OK until the tenth grade.

I will say as an Aggie who has been a fan since the Big 12 era the fact this is even a debate makes me smile
In the Big 12 OU fricking smothered us with a pillow. Each year flipping our recruits, sometimes getting them to rub it in (I will never forgive Venables for the "Mr. Texas A&M" bullshite he pulled).
I personally hated OU so much back then because I felt like they stole our birthrate by taking the second best players in Texas every year (after the Horns got their picks). We would be lucky to get a handful of Texas four stars in the Big 12 era post-Slocum each year, while Stoops was loading up his roster with them.
Texas A&M going to the SEC finally flipped that. We went from fridge top 20 recruiting rankings to consistent top 10 rankings, and OU was the one who paid most of the price for that. You would see it when OU would play teams outside the Big 12 in the playoffs and they didn't have the horses to keep up. Post SEC move those horses were on our roster, and I think the OU leadership waking up to how much conference realignment in 2011 fricked them vs us is why they pushed the Horns to join the SEC with them.
But then Jimbo and NiL changed our equation again. Suddenly we were recruiting nationally, and using money to make it so we were a threat for every four star on the board. That means that both a modern OU and A&M can do well independent of how the other does, especially if the Horns go through another period of decline.
So now I don't hate OU anymore, I hate their coach for what he did to us 20 years ago in recruiting but once OU has a new coach I won't care. I will root for them vs non-SEC teams like any other SEC team not named Texas at that point (because frick Texas).

My mother's family are from Duncan, hell we could be cousins.
The story about the tower shooting and how the shooter was taken out is lore on par with the Alamo.
As for what Robert Heard said, he was almost right. The ten years after Switzer Oklahoma went 2-7-1 vs Texas.
Giibbs 1-5 (I think OU was the favorite to win all 6 of those)
Schnellenberger 0-0-1
Blake 1-2

I think it was Berry Tramel who said that during the Gibbs era.... the Texas game was like watching an episode of the Twilight Zone if you were an OU fan.

Read this for a different perspective on A&M. A&M has their Nick Saban if they can hold onto him. And Trev Alberts doesn't get enough credit apparently. He is the shield for the coaches from the boosters. A&M is undergoing a culture change throughout the athletic department.
A few things. The BoR wants to fire Fisher, and find out in the meeting that the Foundation has already raised all of the money for his buyout. Bjork apparently was dumb enough to go around the BoR where Stoops was concerned. BoR told him that just isn't happening. Boosters have had a TON of influence at A&M, with quotes from previous coaches in the article

Nobody cares about the term Blue Bloods anymore
Coaches are recruiting kids born in 2010. Think about that for a second.
Do you think they give two shits about who was good when their grandparents were little?
It’s all about the $$$ and playing time now. Everyone is on tv Saturday.

OU spent over 30 mil on NIL last year. That’s top 8 in the country.

All that, plus OU will always have strong connections with the DFW Metroplex. Plenty of players close to OU. Families can drive to Norman in about 3 hours.
OU ain't gonna be Nebraska.
