“We have thought about a strategy that we're going to use,” Saban said. “You've heard me speak about this before, but now that it is a rule, we're going to adapt to it and make it an advantage for us.

“I think what’s going to happen as you see how often in a lot of leagues, you know the good players go to a good team and the bad players leave good teams because they’re not playing,” Saban said back in April.

“So is that going to make the rich get richer? I don’t know. You can decide that.”

“I don’t think we’re going to have our best players on our team want to leave Alabama,” he added.

“I don’t think our good players are going to be leaving. But I think we’ll be able to get some good players to join us, when we have room to do that.”

Non-QB Transfer Portal Rankings (247)

#3 - Jahmyr Gibbs, RB (Alabama)
#4 - Zach Evans, RB (Ole Miss)
#5 - Mario Williams, WR (USC)
#6 - Jermaine Burton, WR (Alabama)

I mean, everyone knew it, not just Saban. Side note, when did he get Williams and TooToo? They were pretty vital transfers.

I am not sure if this part will hold up --- good players not leaving. With NIL and the portal, not sure how many good players will stay when they may get buried on depth chart via portal. Everyone is getting their footing right now, and some teams are ahead of the curve. I am curious (in a cynical and somewhat morbid way) to see what happens next.

This is ridiculous but Saban did warn everyone.

I think he meant good players that are starting. Everyone will lose depth, some of it will be talented (Drew Sanders this year is a good example for us).

Don’t be shocked when some 5 stars bolt when a transfer is brought in blocking their playing time early

The portal combined with NIL feels like it is changing college football into something I will no longer enjoy.

Literally happened 2 weeks ago with Drew Sanders. We'll win the trade offs.

well, good is relative. If a player is proven good then he has played enough to be judged that. Since he has played that much, it's unlikely he'll transfer from a team that is a consistent title contender.

hmmm. Did I just say that? Burton was UGA's leading wr by receiving yards and UGA just won the national title. Forget it.

I feel the same way. It's been slowly moving that way for me since the advent of the CFP. NIL and the transfer portal are pushing it over the edge for me. I think this was the first year in the history of my fandom that I watched NFL more than college.

I don’t think playing time will matter as much with NIL. In other words if I am starting for team and can start for team B and B has a better NIL, I may leave anyway. This is why NIL is a bad idea without restrictions. You’re essentially asking persons to commit money to a player but yet that player has no contract in place to stay. This is going to get bad and eventually ruin the sport I think or get so bad that they finally adjust the rules. This would have gone so much better if they divided CFB into power five and group of five then set a fair amount per player that each school can afford to pay. It’s the only way to keep this equitable amongst the colleges.

College sports needs to tread carefully
They are going to erode their fanbase if they keep it up
You already made it unaffordable to bring entire family
I don’t like adding ou and Texas either
We’re slowly losing what made the sec special
I hate that we are not gonna see some long time matchups because of 16 teams

I agree that this will probably happen, but what we are seeing is the evolution of recruiting. A proven “free agent” from the portal is going to be more valuable than a highly rated recruit, depending on the state of your program. I don’t really see this as a bad thing.
