What’s more important? A concert or your playing surface?

South Carolina officials are prepared to replace the entire playing field at Williams-Brice Stadium a week before the Gamecocks football team’s season opener if damage caused by next week’s concert requires it.
Husband and wife music superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z will hold a concert in the stadium Tuesday. In preparation for the show, all the grass at Williams-Brice Stadium has been covered with thick plastic panels. With the panels in place for at least five days, much of the grass is expected to die, Clark Cox, the Gamecocks assistant athletics director for turf and landscaping services, told The State on Thursday.
“When this is all over with and they take that cover up, we will come up and strip the dead grass, anything that is not recoverable, which in this case is probably going to be a pretty large portion if not the entire field, and replace it,” Cox said.

We’re not retarded so we can do both

Just would not have allowed it so close to the opener, a month ago fine.

“It’s probably going to be a three- to four-day process, weather dependent,” Cox said. “Assuming everything goes according to plan, we will get started on Thursday and have the field ready to go by the end of the day Sunday (August 26). After that, we will be getting the field ready just like we would normally do as if nothing had happened.”
The Gamecocks play Coastal Carolina on Sept. 1 at Williams-Brice Stadium, which is why the school has placed an order for a type of turf that requires no “grow-in time.”
So, what exactly is the issue here, OP?

They have a planned 4 day process to replace it and they have a week. I really don’t see the issue. It definitely shouldn’t happen all the time, and my opinion would probably be a bit different if we had an SEC opener or something, but I’m not really concerned about it.
We’re at the offseason point where we’re so starved for new content and football that people are trying to make anything a troll.

When they put a new surface in days before a game, it usually doesn't go well.

These dicks seem really defensive this morning.
Y'all should be excited, this is the best thing that will happen on that field all year.
Jay-Z seems like the type that might enjoy tStatehouse

They no longer host the Bayou Country Superfest at LSU Tiger Stadium, but when they did, it ruined the field.

On a similar note. A half-time performance in Tiger Stadium by the Texas A&M marching band when it has been raining causes a lot of damage the field. Three months later I could still see the ruts.

It is a game vs. Coastal Carolina. We will be fine. lol

I'm sure they know what they are doing. I saw a Guns n Roses and Metallica concert at Williams Brice back in 1992 so this is nothing new to them.

quite telling that a professional/business/med school has to demonstrate to the Ag school fans how to effectively manage turf/playing surfaces.
let's not tell them we replaced everything in summer 2016 to install a new drainage system for W-B. we wouldn't want them to know it was ready in short order for Fall practice in August and the home opener - no issues at all
Carolina Grounds Crew - best in the SEC

When VOLS were allegedly having injury problems at Neyland it was blamed on the groundskeeper. Apparently he was routinely replacing the turf instead of fixing the problems and letting it establish.
TIFWIW.

This won't be routine though.

And just think of all that $$$$ they are going to pay the school for using the stadium...

swap that out with Citadel and its a good laugh

True, but that doesn't change the fact that the field is being replaced a week before a game. A weak opponent doesn't lower the chance of injuries.

Idiot...they will make more than enough to replace the field. From The State...

“The easiest way to explain it is the sheer weight of the sod holds it in place,” Cox said. “It’s a sod that is grown in a particular way that allows us to put the sod down and play on it immediately. It’s a process that has gained popularity over the last couple of years. From a playability standpoint, the field should be ready to go as soon as we put it down.”

Wow, there are some very defensive cocks on here. Time and time again show these new fields are of a lower quality than the normally well-maintained fields. Well all the injuries under champ's watch, I hope this doesn't compound it.
