Here’s younger, hot* Saban rocking some purple ones in the early 2000s. I feel like most coaches wear khaki shorts or basketball style shorts during fall camp or preseason nowadays

* it is not gay to admit that Saban was a handsome man while at LSU

I don't know how old you are, but in the late 80's, early 90's when I played, EVERY fricking coach wore a pair of those, daily.

It was like a rule, or something?

I was right after that mid 90s/early 2000s. There were still a smattering of Bike shorts, but baggy gym shorts had mostly replaced them by that point.

Whole lot of Eastbay brand knee long shorts. And polo shirts at practice were gone too - only t-shirts that said "East High School Football" or were shirts from some old tournament/championship.

Yep, exactly the ones

Then they’d transfer to tKhakis or sweats during cold weather

Yeah, when I went back home and watched a practice in the early 2000s, I noticed that most of the coaches were in what looked to be basketball attire. Gone were the Bike shorts.

Can't say I was sorry to see that.

It almost feels as though the change came around about the same time as the Fab 5 at Michigan, wearing the longer shorts and more "hip hop" style gear. Most basketball teams weren't long to get away from the "ho shorts" that had dominated the previous eras, and maybe this spilled over to coaches in high schools?

Not soon enough

Those shorts were like Tree Fiddy chicks today wearing yoga pants. I like the plus sized woman but I draw the line when they weigh more than I do.

When it got cold, mine kept the Bike shorts and transferred to a light jacket.

They had to keep flexible in case they needed to jump down and show somebody how their stance wasn't quite right, or they weren't firing off the ball/punching with their hands quick enough.

Speaking of, some of us older gents could probably also reminisce about the physical violence we endured that would totally get someone fired today.

We had a running back on our team who just absolutely could not get the plays down, and our coach used to pop him on the top of the helmet after he'd had enough. One day he showed the whole team a huge bruise on his hand, and made the running back take some extra laps for hurting his hand.

He also used to hold the water hose and turn it off when he thought we'd had enough to drink at practice (after giving us salt pills, of course).

Oh man, those were the days.

One assistant coach we had (at a different school than the above) was retired from a professional team, and when he ran his OL drills he would casually swing a piece of wood about chest high, so if an offensive lineman came out of his stance too quickly (and didn't fire off low enough), he'd get clocked in the helmet with a 2x4.

It was very effective.

Uhhh..... Might this guy still be alive, and would he possibly be open to coaching a certain o-line at the flagship university in the state of Arkansas?
