[quote]he only way it would work is if Oklahoma and Texas joined the SEC. The two divisions would be wildly unbalanced. You would have Bama, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia and Florida all in the same division while the only top program in the West would be LSU.

Even with two additional teams not having a permanent cross division opponent would mean you got to play all the teams much more quickly. A kid who started as a freshmen would actually get to play every team in the conference by the time he graduated right.

Seriously?

I'm all for moving Auburn so they can play UF every year. Bama drops UT as a permanent and adds Auburn.

Honestly ... the two AL schools would take more arse-whoopins in the East than they have in the pussy-assed West.

Don't make me whoop out the stats and history this millennium ... and that's all the frick that counts, is this millennium bitches.

So wouldn't you have the same issue in that you'd never play teams in the West?

I get the rivalry part and it makes sense but then Miss State would never play Bama and they're the two closest schools, geographically, in the whole conference.

Sorry I was assuming you would get rid of perm cross rivals.

That way you could play two different east/west teams each year.

Add one more team to the SEC to make 15 teams total. Then make 5 pods of 3 teams each. If placed just right, every single existing SEC rivalry can still be played and every team in the SEC will get a fresh set of teams to play every two years by each set of pods playing a two year round robin.

Auburn should swap with Mizzou.

Agree, it is the only way to do it without perm cross rivals.

I wonder what the divisions would have looked like had we known that one day we'd only have one permanent opponent. Auburn and Tennessee would have probably been switched from the start.

I think they should love Auburn to the East. We could potentially play the Iron Bowl 3 times in one year, would be awesome.

I posted this last year and got scorched for it, but it still rings true: if you look very closely, every major rivalry (i.e., it's a big enough game that it has an official "name" given to it) is cleanly split along state lines:

EASTERN TEAMS
AU-Bama (Iron Bowl)
AU-UG (Deep South's Oldest Rivalry)
Bama-UT (Third Saturday in October)
UF-UG (formerly the World's Largest Cocktail Party)
UK-UT (formerly the Battle for the Barrel)

Division would also include: UT-VU unnamed game (SHOULD have a name since it has been their intrastate season finale for decades)
--
WESTERN TEAMS + SOUTH CAROLINA
A&M-Arky (Southwest Classic)
A&M-USC (James Butler Bonham Trophy Game)
Arky-LSU (Battle for the Boot)
Arky-Mizzou (Battle Line Rivalry)
LSU-Ole Miss (Magnolia Bowl)
MSU-Ole Miss (Egg Bowl)
Mizzou-USC (Battle of Columbia)

Division would also include: A&M-LSU unnamed game (SHOULD have a name since it is their border-state season finale)

The Eastern Division would certainly be top-heavy but would also have the conference's two worst teams as well to balance it some...

With 14 teams it is really hard to even think of most teams in the East being in the same conference since we play them so rarely.

Will A&M and UGA ever play each other?

Given the Iron Bowl, how bad would it be to switch USJW and AU? What would happen in years where there was an Iron Bowl, and the next week, they played again for the SECCG?

Simply put, if you're going to realign divisions or do "pods," then these are the named rivalries/season finales that you are trying your best to preserve:

AU: Bama, UG
Bama: AU, UT
UF: UG
UG: AU, UF
UK: UT
UT: Bama, UK, VU
VU: UT
--
A&M: Arky, LSU, USC
Arky: A&M, LSU, Mizzou
LSU: A&M, Arky, Ole Miss
MSU: Ole Miss
Mizzou: Arky, USC
Ole Miss: LSU, MSU
USC: A&M, Mizzou

It would certainly be a bit awkward. Currently, this scenario is theoretically possible between Arky and Mizzou.

Just swap Auburn and Mizzou. It really isn't any more complicated than that.

I don't think so.

I guess my point is it seems crazy that it might be more than a decade before we get to play certain East teams at home. The same goes for East teams and the West. The permanent crossover really limits it. I would also be ok with going to nine conference games because that would fix it, but that seems unfair to the schools with tough OOC annual rivalry games.

My thought was by moving Alabama and Auburn to the East, you get rid of the need for perm rivals as the big ones stay intact.

Of course, this is also based on adding two teams to the league, which will probably happen even if we do not want it to.

I know I am not the only fan bothered that it seems like the East and West are almost different conferences, given how rarely we play.
