If we're playing UGA, we trot out the back-up QB...that's been Bama's winning formula against the Dawgs the past two years...

You said Alabama would lose to Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee and Western Carolina if Mac Jones played.

Would you like to amend that statement?

it's amazing how touchy alabama fans are. you can't have a real discussion. you can say that tuna is the greatest thing since the tuna sandwich, But if you make a point about any small thing, IN YOUR OPINION, they go berserk and start the name calling and have to rebut every single thing you say.

I realize my post probably hit a raw nerve because I dared say I believed Lord Saban was making an error in taking away Tuna's all out football style, which of course is probably cause for being burned at the stake for blasphemy in certain alabama circles of worship.

You are welcome to that last opinion about "Lord Saban", but most football people believed the exact opposite.

As for the rest of it - I don't know what all that poor, pitiful me act was. You said Tua is missing throws, something which is false, not a matter of opinion.

Have you ever had a back and forth discussion before? You realize that 2nd part is basically the entire substance of it, right?

It sounds like you just wanted to pop off and then get no pushback. That's not a real discussion, FYI.

I said tuna was missing more throws than he did before, without pressure. he threw at least three stinkers against SC, which is uncharacteristic.

and i'm making a point that under this offense he is not making big throws. there were only 2 passes that were really thrown into a window that were extraordinary. normally he throws a bunch of those. but he's not having to so far this year.

where is the old tuna, wowing everyone with those big plays? it's just not that impressive or amazing to throw a 12 yard pass that the wide open receiver takes to the house. now if you don't believe Mac Jones could make those reads and throws like tuna does, and he can't, well, we can certainly recognize that this would be special too.

Except he absolutely isn't

In 2 P5 games he is 54/67 (81%) for 780 yards (11.6 YPA, 390 YPG), 9 TDs and 0 INTs.

He's been nearly perfect.

He was 28/36 (78%) for 444 yards, 5 TDs and 0 INTs

He completed almost 80% of his passes

That's kind of the point. He's actually reading the defense and instead of trying to beat double coverage or fit a ball in a tiny window he's checking to a 3rd receiver or a back in the flat or buying time and hitting a receiver in stride in open space.

I mean it's cool if you want to argue Tua is just making good reads and good, simple throws. But arguing that this is somehow not as good as making riskier throws just because riskier throws are more fun to watch.........makes no sense.

He's being a QB now. He's taking what the defense gives him, and punishing them for whatever weakness their decisions have. Play back? Underneath all day. Blitz from the edge? He's fine flipping it out to the WR or RB. Press? He'll throw over your head. Attack the middle on the RPO? He'll still throw over your head to the slant route.

He looks great and he's doing exactly what most people wanted to see him do in 2019.

Not seeing that. He is at 77% completion this year. Last year was 69%. Sure he hasn't played great competition this year, but there is really no empirical evidence to say he is not as accurate or missing more throws this year.

The goal of any offense should be to move the ball and score points the easiest/least risky way possible. If he can throw to open receivers and score points then why would he throw into tight windows/covered receivers? That doesn't make any sense and, if anything, his ability to throw to the correct, most open receiver is a sign of development.

The problem is you act as if his goal is to wow people with amazing throws. It's not. He has been as productive as he has ever been this year.

Last's year Alabama offense became too dependent on the big play / quick strike. When better defenses took that away (the great defenses can always take one thing away from you), the offense (and Tua) still tried to force it too much and couldn't fall back on a more methodical, sustaining drive. I think what you are seeing this year is a very intentional effort to improve progression and decision-making and make the smartest play each time. Sometimes that is the big throw, often it is not. If teams give him the big play, he will take it. If teams take away the big play, he will adjust.

I see that as nothing but positive maturation of a QB. It's hard to see how you are trying to spin it into a negative at all.

Let this sink in:

Alabama went undefeated and won a national championship with Greg McElroy as their QB.

He passed for 58 yards in the BCSNCG and Alabama won by 3 TDs.
