what running back do you consider the best ever in the NFL?

As noted in another thread, I'm not a NFL fan anymore and actually watched Brian's Song on another channel last night, and it made me curious about the best rb. I've seen Gale Sayers mentioned sometimes as the best. More often I have seen Jim Brown. I know a lot of folks would vote for Walter Payton, and some probably for Emmitt Smith.
Who do you think are the best 3 in NFL history?

Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, Barry Sanders or Jim Brown
There have been a lot of good ones worthy of a ton of recognition. It is hard to say one is exclusively the best.

Jim Brown (career)
Gayle Sayers, Barry Sanders (pure electric)
OJ Simpson (first to 2000 yards in a season playing only 14 regular-season games) No other human has accomplished that feat to this day.

Does make you wonder, though, how any of these guys would do outside of their era.
If you teleported nearly any of the current top NFL RBs back 50 or 60 years, would they similarly dominate?

Honestly I thought about OJ in place of Jim Brown. OJ was incredible.

Barry Sanders.... In 9 seasons at Detroit he had no offensive line and still had almost 16000 yds rushing...retired at 29 as one of the classiest players ever.

Unfortunately, he's not politically correct these days, just physically superior. People, don't you just love them?

Didn't realize Frank Gore is 3rd all-time in NFL career rushing yards, would never have guessed that (fwiw)

this one is easy. it's bo. if his career doesn't get cut short, who knows how many records he'd have broken.

Barry Sanders by a fairly wide margin IMO.

I didn't fail to mention him in the OP because of that. I just didn't think of it, same as Barry Sanders, because even though I'm not a NFL fan, I know both of those guys were among the best.
One guy that has surprised me being mentioned so much in this thread is Campbell
