What I believe and what I know

This is going to be a long post, but this is all info I have received first hand or message board chatter hobbled together from the past 12-15 months.
I was told last January that the hiring of Golesh set Auburn back 5-6 years. I didn't believe it at the time, but I do now and it has nothing to do with AG and everything to do with the Program as a whole. (from a friend who was on the previous two staffs.) I thought he was just salty about not being retained.
First off the hiring of AG was basically backdoored in by Cohen and a lot of money people were blindsided by it. (this is from a friend who is a big time donor)
The money folks were fine with the hiring of DJD as HC and Buster Faulkner as OC after the Sumrall hiring was also botched by Cohen.
Cohen also wanted to trim some of the budget in the recruiting network and off field staff.
That started with Will Redmond who, imo, is the best in the business at what he does. From my understanding Golesh was under the impression that that network would remain completely intact when he was hired and was a big reason he came here.
When Redmond wasn't retained all of the information and scouting reports they had ready to go for the portal also went with him.
Golesh had to scramble and put together the off field staff in time for the portal so he went with people he knew, the only problem was they had scouted for players they thought would fit at USF and be productive players for them at that level not at a p4 school.
With the mass exodus of players that we had someone had to replace them so once again he went with familiarity and that caused a lot of the issues that we are currently having with the OL and QB.
Byrum was paid very well, but that is because some places had also offered him a pretty good bit of money to come there.
There is basically no chance he is benched for the backup because Tia simply isn't a player that is capable of playing at this level from what I hear.
Imo, We don't get better until Cohen is gone and that is a common sentiment among most everyone of importance at AU.
I think a change happens sometime between now and the end of this year regarding Cohen and if it doesn't, I would be highly surprised.
As for a replacement, I know that some people have talked to Bruce about it, and right now he isn't really interested, but I think they could have a framework in place that could make him take the job.
So basically Golesh was dealt a really shite hand and is having to make the best of it. That doesn't excuse everything we have seen on the field so far, but it is a large part of it.

shite. Having Bruce as AD may have been worth it. I do think with support Golesh could be good.

There is nothing they can set you back 5-6 if the powers that be and the $$$ folks get behind the program. Auburn could be back playing for championships within a year or so.
It will cost money. It will cost money I said. We have tried budget picking and no we can’t spend like aTm of UTa but we can sure cram a couple seasons in where we way over pay for a damn good roster. That’s all it takes.
That’s why I haven’t been on the board much in months. The fans and admin don’t want to pony up. So why expect greatness when you are playing with 1/2 the resources.

I do think 5-6 is an exaggeration to an extent, but 2-3 at least with Redmond gone. Someone has to rebuild everything he had put together and IMO that takes a good bit of time.
All the scouting and work they'd done for 28/29/30 class also went out the window too, so I think that is what he was alluding towards with the 5-6 years talk was.

Our ability to shoot ourselves in the foot never ceases to amaze me. The fact Cohen thought we were in any position to reduce recruiting capabilities is truly inexcusable.

I’m with Corch on this. They could be playing for a championship next season if everyone ponies up the money. I’ve had my OTV subscription for a while now because I don’t want to see a shite product every year. How many OL did Kentucky outbid Auburn for in the portal this year? Yeah, and those 3 would be starting for Auburn right now, and the offense would look much better.
P.S. whoever you talked to thought promoting Durka was a good idea. That told me everything I needed to know about their opinion.

That would make sense for the portal additions.
I agree the half decade setback estimation is probably pessimistic, however we've essentially been in the wilderness since the Gus tenure ended. During a highly formative new era of player movement and compensation, Auburn football has more or less been a punchline. With each passing year remaining in the wilderness we will quickly lose the relevance we once had.

It is absolutely insane. It should and will cost him his job.

My guy wanted Sumrall, fwiw.
The only reason he was kind of okay with DJD was because it would have kept most of the infrastructure that Hugh had put in place in tact.
Despite all of hugh's onfield shitting the bed, he'd built a good off field vehicle.

I am not buying the Bruce shite.
Nor do I want him as AD

So if it was so good, why didn’t any of that off field staff recommend to Hew to quit throwing so much money into the WR room and go get better Olinemen and send Thorne packing?

That doesn’t add up. If AU was paying Redmond to compile the info then it belongs to AU.

In 2026, I would hope an athletic director candidate at an SEC school would be selected from a pool of candidates with experience in athletic administration or at least similar organizations.
The person’s career should demonstrate excellence at ever increasing responsibilities and roles.

Cohen came from Mississippi State didn't he? Just because you are an AD at an SEC institution doesn't mean you are good at what you do or are a fit for every other institution in the league.
It'll be our luck we fire Cohen and hire the Arkansas AD.

So this is a rinse repeat of the Harsin Freeze bs … face it, we don’t have the $$$ to compete and are not coming back

Asking what would be the incentives for Cohen to cut support staff, particularly in recruiting.
I could imagine that anyone could unilaterally think some of the staff sucks, and need to be replaced, but that happens, he is in charge.
Can't imagine a public institution would even contemplate hiring an AD with a son as the lead of the second largest revenue generator.
Pearl already got what he wanted, and wouldn't screw it up.
