Bear Bryant wasn't shite at actually coaching. He just had more scholarships to offer than other teams, and bought hookers for HS kids so they would come play for him

Not a damn thing he has passed the bear and it’s not even close … the only thing left is to make his bronze statue gold in the champions walk

But to answer the OP's question, he's already surpassed the Bear. He's won at an unprecedented level in an era where more parity exists due to increased exposure as well as rules and regulations that weren't on the books in the 70s.

He's sitting at 183 wins at Alabama and is well within striking distance of Bryant's school record of 232 wins. The only thing I don't think Saban will surpass the Bear in, however, is conference championships. Bryant won 15 in his career (one at Kentucky and Texas A&M; 13 at Alabama). Saban currently has 11 (one at Toledo, two at LSU, and eight at Alabama).

Saban is on a victory lap right now

Anything he adds to his resume is just stat padding at this point. He’s the GOAT and he’s just trying to set unattainable records.

Y’all say the same thing about Saban. It’s frankly astonishing how much Alabama has accomplished considering they’ve never had a real coach. Imagine what a juggernaut the program will be if they ever do land a halfway decent coach.

It's so crazy to think the 2 best coaches in CFB history coached at one school. What are the chances? It's like winning the lottery twice. Like a 0.000001% chance.

According to almost every conceivable criteria, he has already surpassed Bryant.

Fewer SEC Championships but SEC Championships are much harder to get these days, and he’s not far behind, so it’s not really comparable.

The only big issue is the win/loss record against Auburn which is way more even than under Bryant.

Saban against Auburn while at Bama: 10-5

Bryant: 20-5.

Is it the coach or the school? When Bryant and Saban both arrived at Alabama, they both were sitting at around 90 career victories and a winning percentage below 70%. Both of them won over 80% of the games they coached at Alabama and overachieved relative to what they had done in the jobs they had before arriving at Alabama.

With Bear I think it was definitely the school, there was undeniably an advantage to being a blue blood back then.

With Saban, I think he would've had similar success at any school with comparable resources maybe even more so at LSU because he'd already started building his program and wouldn't have had to waste 2 years in the NFL and 1-2 years rebuilding Bama.

Why does his record feel so much worse than 10-5...

I dunno. Perhaps because 3 of the losses were very winnable and Saban got out-coached by a glorified high school OC. That’s got to hurt.

I see Bear Bryant's grave a couple times a year. I have a lot of family and a couple friends buried in Elmwood Cemetery where the Bear is at.

One grave I visit is in the lot right next to Bear, and coincidentally the best place to park puts me about 100 feet from the Bear himself. The fine folks who buried him had the forethought to bury right next to, and facing the roadway in the cemetery to make him easily accessible to even motorized scooter bound Bama fans making the pilgrimage. The most common gift for pilgrims to leave at the shrine are pennies from years Bear won a Natty, bags of golden flake chips, glass bottles of coke, and teddy bears.

I have seen the Bama fan pilgrims pull up, say a prayer and leave their offering before.

On one occasion after seeing a Bama fan pull up and leave a fresh bag of golden flake potato chips, after he pulled off, I took his chips. And I ate Bear Bryant's golden flake potato chips. And I also scored enough pennies from Bear Bryant's grave to buy a 75cent can of coke from the gas station to wash down those golden flake chips. And it was a delicious snack, all thanks on Bear Bryant from the afterlife

Even if it is a little silly and the priorities seem to be a little out-of-whack for some fans, probably not a cool thing to steal from a grave and brag about it.

Bryant made Alabama into a blue blood, at least in the Poll Era. Between 1936-1960, Alabama had won zero national championships and three conference championships. From 1961-1981, Alabama won six national championships and 13 conference championships.
