could sell TV time recruits. Bama was one of the few SEC program on national tv consistently.
So, about how many times a year were Bear's teams on TV?

Don't know specifics but they were the marque SEC team.

I think what Saban needs to become the greatest coach of all time has already happened - Urban Meyer taking the job at Ohio State.
Saban needs someone out of conference to build up a team that his teams can face and beat in one or more competitive National Championship games.

Didn't think so. They weren't on more than three times a year...sometimes only twice. ABC was the only network televising games...sometimes they had one on Saturday, sometimes two.

Succeed in the NFL.

I don't know. Nick is definitely the best of the BCS generation but it's not like he rolled out a line of undefeated seasons. He's benefited from some incredible luck that no one seems to want to talk about. He's a few plays away from just being another SEC coach but I guess that could be said for most coaches.

Probably needs to find a way to beat the greatest college football player of all time first. Can he get it done Sept 14th?
He has to beat Red Grange?

This is more than all other SEC schools. That's my point.

I think he needs also needs to win a couple sec championships in seasons where we dont win the BCS. I do think that will happens eventually though.

He's won 4 titles, impressive no matter how they went down, but he got huge bailouts in 3 of them to get in position to win.
So, Saban's legacy as a coach is determined by Oklahoma State, Baylor and others? You could say that about every coach that ever won a national championship. If Saban could just win an SEC championship at Ole Miss or Arkansas, he would be the greatest coach in the history of football.

So by your definition Bryant wouldn't be among the greatest of all time? He'd be the first to tell you that he wasn't an innovator. He was just able to roll with the times and win football games the old fashioned way.
Best winner? sure. Best overall coach? No, for the reasons you already gave.
Still top 5 though despite the lack of innovation just for how overwhelmingly good he was at what he did not only at Bama but at Kentucky and A&M as well.
