B12 was mostly Big 8 schools so moving the HQ from the Big 8 footprint to the SWC footprint was pretty crappy.
And it was voted on by the schools. The four Texas schools, the two Oklahoma schools, and Colorado voted to move it from the Big 8 HQ location (Kansas City) to Dallas.
Texas wasn't a king in the Big 12. Every school had a vote in how the conference operated. Did the conference members make decisions that ultimately doomed the conference? Perhaps. But Texas wasn't solely responsible.

Can’t wait to welcome Texas and Oklahoma to Lexington. Playing SEC teams isn’t like going to Ames, Manhattan, Waco and Lawrence. Both of you all are in for a rude awakening!
So you think OU and Texas are going to be quaking in their boots to come to Lexington do you?
I can tell you you don't have any clue how white hot Stillwater, Ames and Manhattan can get when OU or Texas play there. In OU's case, they have an 82% winning percentage against every Big XII team besides Texas.
As a result, a lot of bad blood has developed between these fans and OU. Texas... of course, is Texas and it didn't take a decade for the old Big 8 teams to hate them as much as the old SWC teams do.
As loud as SEC stadiums might get, they aren't going to have the pent up emotions of these Big XII teams have.

I will never understand why a blue blood like Oklahoma does what austin wants when they are the star. Stockholm Syndrome maybe? OK Lite steps in line with OU. Surprised by the Buffs. Maybe they got a promise from austin to break the tie.
Bigger issue is why move at all when 8 out of 12 (66.7%) were already there? NCAA had their HQ in the same city and CWS was just the next state over.

Somebody in TX had to want the move and the other 3 did not seem ego driven enough to come up with the idea in the first place.

Texas has a more recent national championship, dipshit.

Sooners have been to 4 CFP's, how many has Utx been to?
Utx had DKR and 1 good year with ButterTooth
Sooners have been good for decades with many different coaches.

Must be tough to have your little brother be the star!
(7) Oklahoma = 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974 (AP), 1975, 1985, 2000
(4) Texas = 1963, 1969, 1970 (Coaches), 2005
As for CFP
62.5% = SEC (Alabama, LSU, and UGA)
25.0% = ACC (Clemson)
12.5% = B1G (Ohio State)
00.0% = B12 (zip for Sooners or Utx)

No sleeping implied if you're truly a woman. Just roll over and bite the pillow.

The Big 12 wasn't a renaming of the Big 8. It was two conferences disbanding and forming a new conference. A new conference has to pick a HQ. 7 of the 12 voted to put it in Dallas.
Why wouldn't the Oklahoma schools want the epicenter of their new conference to be in the same state that butters their recruiting bread? Dallas is closer to Norman than it is to Austin.
Colorado voting along with them is indicative of the same issues that plagued the Big 12: not everyone was aligned, because it was a marriage of convenience. CU-Boulder does not think of itself as a plains & corn school, they view themselves as a liberal west coast institution. In fact, CU's regents rejected an invitation to the Pac10 just before the Big 12 formed. But having a vote at all is indicative of misalignment within.
Additionally, Missouri's chancellor at the time said "The Big Eight needs to do more homework before finalizing a deal to bring four Southwest Conference schools into the league, and the union doesn't mean Missouri is in for the long haul."
The fact is, Big 12 was on a shaky foundation from the very start.
You do touch on a good point: four schools from the same state is an anchor that threatens long-term stability of a conference. The SEC and Big10 avoided this. The Big 12, Pac12, and ACC each have a "dominant" state, and they will all die in the next 15 years.
