Ball is touched before 10 yards, officials inexplicably award ball to Oregon after looking at the bottom of the pile, where the football doesn't exist as it's already been recovered by #23 from Oklahoma(0:05 mark). Review upholds it

Yes, the officiating crew was fired. Sadly, Colorado's coach, Bill McCartney, was a Mizzou alum and former player.
Plus, Charles Johnson (RIP) did not get over the line anyway. A local TV camera caught Johnson rolling over under the pile and placing the ball over the end zone.

The big 8 was determined to get Colorado at least a share of the Championship that year. Shoulders were shrugged, apologies were mumbled, little was done. Pretty much exactly what will happen to WMU.
Much as I like Whittingham, I hope Michigan gets curb stomped the rest of the season.
The only consolation is that Colorado has won nothing since then. If only Michigan could be so cursed.

This was probably 5 years before I really started following CFB. Unsure how I never saw this… watched the whole video lol.
Closest thing I can think of as a LSU fan was the PP7 toe tap, which I still think was very consequential because of the context in the season / trajectories of the programs… but this is really next level lol.
As ridiculous as the Michigan call was… you could never see something like this happen in modern CFB.

I still like Whittingham. Saw him shake hands with the opposing HC and straight up say “there was no time”.
But I dislike Michigan far more than I like Whittingham, so agreed lol.

Instead of accurately framing it as a hose job by the refs, Colorado head coach Bill McCartney blamed Missouri’s turf for Colorado’s poor performance. It took him decades to finally admit that he handled the situation wrong.
This is the same guy who was a conservative Christian and started “promise keepers” whose entire premise was based on ethics and integrity. I lost all respect for him after his response to that game.
Btw, as the previous poster said, even on the fifth down, Colorado did not get in.

At least with the 5th down game, you can assume that Colorado wouldn’t have taken a spike on what should have been 4th down if the officials were counting properly. Now, IDK if the clock would have run out if they didn’t do the spike.

I remember that game well. I got angry as a neutral observer, so I can't imagine what it was like watching as an Arkansas fan.

That was hardly the most controversial thing about McCartney. He would later become possibly the single most controversial person in America in the second half of the 1990s. He headed the Promise Keepers, a massive and extremely controversial nationwide organization of conservative Christian men. They had gatherings of over 100,000 people.
It’s beyond remarkable how both McCartney and his group became almost completely forgotten after 2000 or so. I can hardly think of any other person in America who was so controversial at the time yet suddenly became so forgotten.

Don't watch the 1982 game against $MU you'll break something, the PI call is one of the major reasons why D PI is only a max of 15 yards in college football.
