uga clemson was one of the fiercest rivalries of the 80s. Both teams were nationally relevant and they played some wars even into the 90s.
People don't realize we've only played 7 teams in our hisotry more than them, we've played clemson more than we've played tennessee, LSU, msu, ole miss, etc.

Yep - I don't think people realize exactly where the two schools are located in the states. Folks living on the south part of Lake Hartwell are literally 45 minutes away from both Clemson and UGA.

To be fair, I think most people would find it a surprise that UGA and UT only played 7 times between 1938 and 1991 before it became an annual match-up.
eta: That includes a 30 year gap from the late 30s to late 60s.

Uga /Clemson.
Best rivalry that doesn’t happen annually.

Yep - quite a few games like that.
- Auburn and LSU only played 8 times between 1943 and 1991
- Auburn and Ole Miss only played 14 times before 1990

So you're saying those seven teams are your rivals? Who are they if I may ask?
I'm going to guess, in no particular order:
Ga Tech
Auburn
Florida
Vandy
South Carolina
Alabama
????????

No, I did not say that. We have 3 rivals. Not sure why you pretended like I suggested we have more.

Labor Day '82 vs Clemson was the most out of control weekend I'd ever seen in Athens.
Opening game under the lights for the 1st time in 30+ years and featured the previous 2 NC teams on Monday Nt.
EVERBODY came back to school early (school didn't start to mid Sept back then) Party started Friday and didn't stop until the early Tuesday morning.

Yea, was about to say, Alabama and Georgia are in no way rivals. Competing for the same goal at a high level, sharing a long state border, lots of mingling alums in Atlanta, etc? Yes. But definitely not rivals in the traditional sense.

I wished we played Georgia every year. I think we would see some great games like those in the 80’s. It would be a better option than our in state rival.

And you may meet in the playoffs. That would be sick.
Also in the future, you guys should play in the peach bowl if you don’t make it to the playoff.

I am not saying that SEC expansion and lengthening of the conference schedule was a bad thing, but I will say that one of the big drawbacks was the end of some of the out-of-state, out-of-conference rivalries that some SEC teams had. For example, UGA-Clemson, Auburn-Georgia Tech, Kentucky-Indiana, etc.

People on the outside really have no idea how intense this rivalry is. Even the younger generation of Clemson and UGa fans really have no idea. I remember fights all over the place back in the 70's and 80's between fans all year round.
With that said, I would love see Clemson and UGa play in the National title. It would be something.
My second favorite matchup would be South Carolina and Oregon State for the mascots...LOL
